What is the use of a mainboard?
Why can't you miss the mainboard in your computer?
Since when is it used in the computer?
How has the mainboard changed since the beginning?

This sounds like a homework question. There is a wealth of information right here in The PC Guide -- just click the blue logo at the upper left. Most people use the term "motherboard" instead of mainboard.

Jacqieus......to get a good start on your homework assignment my suggestion is to type "mainboard" in the address line of your browser and start learning about it.

Because it is hard to keep the peripheral cards in place with just one screw.

Google (http://www.google.com) can help with your homework. That's not what we're here for. If we do your studying for you, then you don't learn a thing. You have to do that on your own. Sorry, I'm not trying to be rude, but even with questions that are not homework related I try to post links as often as possible so the person can learn something too, rather than simply answering the question. Best way I can help you is to prod you into helping yourself....

One good hint think of the meanings of the name........
That will also help you when doing a search.

Jacqieus, if you have not found anything yet, these links, Motherboards (http://viking.delmar.edu/courses/CIS312J/EBOOK/wrh02.htm#E69E31) and Illustrated PC Guide (http://www.karbosguide.com/) , may help.
