I have satellite internet and have a tested download speed of better than 500 kilobits/sec on average, which is what I'm paying for.

The problem is that my PC performs like it's connected via dial-up. Web pages take a long time to load and I often get timed out on new page loads. E-mail messages with attachments take forever to load (at speeds of less than 10KB/ps) and Usenet is pretty much useless.

I've run (and re-run) my McAffee virus scan without any results. I purchased PCPitstop to optimize my system and that didn't turn up anything either.

Tonight, I went into the control panel and took a look at my internet connection. I did some tests, and here's what one test came up with

Ping Gateway 75.104.116.1 : Failed
Ping DNS 75.104.96.61 : Failed
Using another connection, could ping 127.0.0.1
Ping Network 75.104.119.255 : Failed

What does this mean? Is there a problem with my hardware? All of the diagnostics I ran on my network card said that things were operating normally.

Suggestions? If I'm only going to get dial-up performance from my internet connection I would rather only pay $14.99 a month for it instead of $54.99.

I would contact your provider. Satelite uses dial up for upstream and the dish for downstream doesn't it? If you cannot ping your DNS servers I would usually say "now there's your problem" but you may just have a sub par connection. If you have any internet connection at all all the time, howver slow, then that tells you the hardware is working. When you go Ipconfig /all what do you have?

Wild Blue internet does not use dial-up for upload, it's dish both ways. Here's what the i.p. config says:

Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

C:\Documents and Settings\John>ipconfig

Windows IP Configuration

Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection:

Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 3:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : wildblue.com
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 75.104.117.10
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.252.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 75.104.116.1

I contacted my provider when I first noticed the problem and they said it was my hardware and that I should take the computer into the shop. I thought about doing that, but figured I'd try a forum like this to see if someone else had gone through the same routine.

You might try the following (in order).

1. Reinstall the latest NIC driver for your network card.
2. Replace the network cable with a new one.
3. Replace the NIC.

It is possible you are suffering from a faulty NIC card or driver.

Good luck :)
