Thanks

"Pins" refers to the # of metal 'contacts' which you can count at the bottom of a RAM chip where it fits into the Ram slot. There are two kinds in common use today: sims-72 pins and dimms-168 pins. Additionally, DDR ram is now out, but I dont know how many pins it has. On very OLD systems there might be a ram chip with fewer "pins".

Will the number of pins be written on the stick of RAM?

72 pin is 4 1/4" long and has a notch in the middle. 168 pin is longer, about 5 1/4" and has two notches I think, offset. MY only stick of 168 pin is in this machine so I can't pull it to look. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif
Some but not all will have the #1 and #72 or 168 pins marked. I have some 72 pin here with 1 printed on one end and 72 printed on the other. That's to tell you which is pin #1.
Older computers used 30 pin which is 3 1/2" long and has no notches. They were normally used in 286/386/486 class machines, Pentiums went to 72 and 168 pin memory.
