OK Pete, no more homework questions, sorry. My girlfriend is in big trouble with her father. He thinks she screwed up his computer by downloading from the internet, but I think the problem is with ME and a keyboard. He installed ME 2 months ago and had no problem. But about 1 month ago he switched from the Hewlitt Packard keyboard he had to a Microsoft. Now on a regular basis it locks up and gives an error message when they get on the net. I told her to try switching the keyboards back but he won't let her touch it. She's gonna try to get me the error message tomorrow so I can check microsofts site. Her dad did find out the keyboard wasn't compatable, but he wouldn't switch key boards, just downloaded some drivers and expects things to work now, but they don't. Anyone familiar with a similar problem? I've heard ME can be quirky.

There is ALWAYS a first time; however, I have NEVER seen a keyboard (which was in good operating condition) not work on a system because of WINDOWS! Your situation could be the first time, but I rather doubt the keyboard has anything to do with his problems. Me is still a rather "buggy" OS and I suspect his problems have more to do with virtual drivers or some software program than the keyboard !

I seriously doubt that one too, I'm using a keyboard right now by IBM dated 4 Feb 93, and have used several different brands on different machines. The one I have now is made like a tank, and weighs close to as much...But I love it, I've picked up about 8 or 10 of these things in resale shops, and use them on every computer I build or work on so I don't have to switch from one keyboard to another. That sucks! I've used these same IBM's on Compaq's, Gateways, Toshiba, Packard Bell, (which comes with its own keyboard too), HP, Epson, GRiD, IBM, home built, and off brands and every one has worked perfect. So I doubt it's related to the keyboard.
If it is, in fact not compatible, he'd be better off to switch back to the original one.
Get the error message, we can't go much further without it. I hate to say it, but it might turn out to be related to something that was downloaded. ME is flaky to begin with, and if you happen to install something with ME compatibility issues, you'll have problems. Get the error message and we'll see if we can find out. I'm with Randy on this one, has to be something with drivers or a program.

What ISP does he use. There is a known problem with AOL and Explorer5.5 and ME in general. This can be fixed with a patch from Microsoft.
I have seen a ton of complaints here about ME and I have started looking into it quite a bit. Turns out that the most of the problems are comming from upgrades to machines that just are not ready for it.
I know some of you are realy going to stick me for this http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif as you have probably seen it on new builds. I have it on a Compaq laptop PIII, 188mg, and on a homegrown Celeron, 128 mg. I also work with 3 other people with nearly identical Celeron machines. All 4 with a wide veriety of software and minor hardware differances. No problems. I am driven to figure this out HAA HAA http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif
Check the compatability with ISP and if you are running Explorere 5.5, get rid of it.
Let us know.
