This is my plan but what do I really need? I plan to pick-up AT&T dsl service and I have two home computers. I have added a network card to each computer and then plan to connect the two computers with just a 5 port hub. The supplied dsl modem would connect from the phone line to the hub and from the hub to each pc. Will this work? Do I need a router? Does the router serve as a firewall? All thoughts appreciated.

Yes, you need a router.

You need to know if your modem also serves as a router. If it does, you don't need to buy one.

It will not work with a hub/switch.

Most routers are hardware firewalls. Most, but not all, of us also recommend a software firewall.

Had not thought about the modem serving as a possible router but will check that out. That the reason for the questions. What router do we need to be looking for?
The modem would connect to the router from the phone line and then connect the two pcs to the router?

Phone Line-->DSL Modem-->Router-->PC's

I personally prefer Linksys.

Thanks for the info. What Linksys model would you recommend?

Any of these (http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Product_C1&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1115416939789&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper&lid=3978927773B02) would be fine...

Just disable the wireless until you need it....
