There are some games out there that use a swapfile (whether windows' or one of its own) no matter what, so with any amount of memory they would still access the HD. Another possible area of access is from the sound/musuc part of the game. Turning off some of the audio features could improve play. Also what and how many programs running in the backgroud can interfere with game play. The higher the resolution the more memory it takes to produce the images, try running at a slightly lower resolution and see if the drive access decreases, also if your video card uses some sort of texture compression the compressed textures could be stored on the drive. And of course the biggest/most important item for playability are the drivers, the latest and greatest games require the same for the drivers, not just video card but sound card, too.

Many games actually should be run at lower resolution. Some of the few I have will even give me a pop-up window telling me the graphics will be best at 256 colors. The only exception in my admittedly small game collection is Unreal, which says in the manual to use 32 Bit True Color for best results.

I'll agree with mjc, lowering resolution and sound should smooth things out. I'm running a P-233MMX with 64MB RAM and Quake, Descent I&II, Heretic, and Sierra Pinball (Creep Night & The Lost Continent) all run very well with sound and video maxed out, but at 256 color resolution. The only one that ever gets jerky if I run higher resolution is Descent II, it will freeze a tiny bit every few minutes if I run 32 bit True Color. Unreal works fine at 32 bit, and rarely freezes at all, and then only a tiny jerk rather than anything that hampers the game's playability. I have sound settings at medium level for that one.

Newer games might be much more picky about video and sound settings, mine are all older and less resource intensive. I've noticed from the forums that several people have had similar problems with much faster machines than mine and twice the memory or more.

Some games also have files that need to be accessed from the cd furing play...sometimes these files can be copied to the hd which reads faster than the cdrom, improving speed...

Check the game maker's website to see if there is a solution like this...and, as always, check for patches to the game...

The other posts have excellent advice as well, new drivers are extremely important...
