I am trying to remote desktop and am having issues with it. I am through a router and that is where I am getting stuck. I tried bypassing that and plugging in straight to the modem and remoting in worked fine. The issue comes when I plug the router back in. I did some research, forwarded port 3389 and attempted to set up the DDNS parameters but to no avail. I read also that the IP had to be static but for some reason I am not able to do static IP. I am dual booting XP Pro SP2 and Vista Ultimate on 2 separate HDDs. When I setup a static IP on XP it gives me the conflicting IP message. My mobo is the Asus P5B Deluxe and has 2 NICs built in, one of which is disabled. I am stumped over this and would really appreciate some help. Thanks a lot.

hmm, you plug your machine into the modem and you can RDP to your public IP with no extra configuration on the PC or the modem but, when you add the router it doesn't work? When you try this with your modem does your PC have a public IP?
As for the IP address conflict.
Have you tried a different static IP? It is possible the disabled NIC is set to DHCP and it has been given an IP even though it is now disabled. Whatever you get with DHCP on try adding 100, so 192.168.1.2 would be 192.168.1.102. Open your windows firewall to allow Remote Desktop. Port forward on the router 3389 to your static IP.

I install the IIS and enable remote desktop and when Im only connected to the modem it works and am given a certain IP address. When I connect the router though it doesn't. I have port forwarded 3389 and is accepted in Windows Firewall. I read that a DDNS had to be setup so I did that but still cannot access it. Also when the router is hooked up, I get a different IP address...not the 192.168...but the external IP.
Im not sure whats going on with the dual NIC and IP conflict. How can a disabled NIC adapter still hold a DHCP IP address? This area of computers, sadly, is not my strongsuit. There is another connection that is active called a 1394 connection, which I only know as firewire. Should I try disabling that? Also, how do I clear the disabled NICs IP? Sorry for my ignorance and thanks for the help.

I got the issue with the static IP figured out but I still cannot figure out the remote desktop. When I was configuring the DDNS, the screen refreshes and says the DDNS updated successfully. When looking at the screenshot from the dyndns.com website, they show it as DDNS is enabled for this router. So confused. Ideas welcome.

If you have a static public IP why do you even bother with dyndns. In any case, get RDP working via the IP before worrying about about DNS.
