While XP may have peaked, Gray warned not to bet against the 6-year-old operating system.
Eh, its six years old, and still to this day, one hell of an OS. SP3 should only make it stronger.
"There are plenty of companies looking forward to XP SP3," he said. That next hot-fix and patch rollup is to ship sometime in the first quarter of 2008, Microsoft has said, and it will reportedly be XP's last service pack.
thats... well... i can understand that, thats not really even pushing it.
2000's last service pack was in 2005. Here 7 years later MS is releaseing one for XP. I stand for MS on this part. When it comes to 2000, XP, and Vista, i dont understand when people say "The Microsoft Support Hole of Death!" or something similar. MS is doing good on 2000, supporting it for a decade is no "Support Hole of Death".

But, i think this is a stupid fight, MS is fighting themselves here. Theres one thing they refuse to get, They didn't release an operating system for six years, and people grew very acoustomed to XP. Just because a new one is out now, doesnt mean people want to go from XP, which feels like home, to a new, more buggy OS that isnt even as reliable.

You have to have a compelling reason for businesses to go to something new, but VISTA is no reason in and of itself. It runs no "killer applications" that would make you run out there and get it for business, and it makes you also invest in a complete fleet of new hardware to meet the demands of the new OS, new training, and upgrades for support.

There are few advantages and major disadvantages, so business has not embraced Vista and has insisted they continue with XP until Microsoft comes up with some better reasons.
Still waiting Microsoft.

To me, Vista is such a case of "One step forward, two steps back."
XP was(and IS) a very, very good offering from MS, and I am perfectly happy to pay for each and every one of the XP Home OEM copies I have bought for upgrades/new builds, but I am advising EVERYONE who even THINKS about getting Vista, that they will need to buy a completely new computer, and be willing to spend at least $2,000(NZ dollars) in doing so, as this is the only way you can ensure that Vista will run fast, and with little or no problems.

When people hear this, they back off REAL quick...

Vista is the two steps back.

I really do like the new bog-standard GUI and the more up-market Aero GUI - these are really nice, but you could probably download a Vista theme for XP, i'm sure...

It's the DRM and other background spying that Vista does, that really annoy me the most, but the system requirements are a major annoyance for me too.
