Yes, get the removal tool from the Symantec website to dislodge the Norton 2007.
Yes, AVG free is ok to use, but Avast Home Edition is better IMHO.

Well, Norton has some files that stubbornly resist removal and will not come clean using Add/Remove. That is why they have the removal tool on the website and why I recommended using it.

Follow the removal steps on their site for the best results.

Download AVG and the Norton removal tool first... Go offline, remove Norton and install AVG and then go online to immediately update AVG... It is not a good idea to be online for even a little while with no antivirus...
However, I suggest going with Avast instead...

Actually, a new Anti-Virus i've been trying has been really good
It's kinda annoying, but it's VERY secure and always keeps your computer safe
Earlier today it said it found some WIN32.backdoor something trojan, for free, running in real time.
if you want to try it, you can, but keep in mind it's still in BETA

What is everyone's opinion of Kaspersky's Internet Security suite?
I just got it since my subscription to NAV expired just as I was doing a clean reinstall of Windo$e.
I changed programs because all the magazine reviews I read were glowing and so far, I am very disappointed. My system is slow, I get warnings on everything I do, for example, I just printed something. I got a warning that a suspicious activity was taking place. It was the print spooler.
I did a full system sweep on my system that should be clean. I formatted the HDD, reinstalled the OS, and reinstalled most of my commercial programs. I got 98 suspicious hits. When I started to review the positives, some where things I didn't recognize, but most of them were. For example, I accidentally left one of the installation CDs in the CD drive. The setup file (setup.exe) was flagged. System files were flagged. If I hit delete all, I probably could have screwed up my OS and had to reinstall it again.

It sounds like you have heuristics turned on full... Try turning them down and see how it goes... I know KIS gets some false positives, but pretty much all antiviruses will get some... KIS is considered one of the top options and is supposed to be easier on resources than Norton... Of course, I prefer assembling my own suite and have no noticeable slow down effect from them...
The slowness is the main concern I would have... You may want to consider uninstalling and reinstalling it, it sounds like you could have a corrupted install...
