I've got an HP dv6000 and I was looking to upgrade the RAM. As of now I have two 512MB sticks, which according to crucial's scanner aren't dual channel.

This is what crucial handed me:
Maximum Memory Capacity: 2048 MB
Currently Installed Memory: 1024 MB
Available Memory Slots: N.A.
Number of Banks: 2
Dual Channel Support: N.A.
CPU Manufacturer: GenuineIntel
CPU Family: Intel(R) Core(TM) Duo CPU T2450 @ 2.00GHz Model 14, Stepping 12
CPU Speed: 798 MHz

Is it normal to not have Dual Channel capability? Is there a possibility that crucial's scanner isn't accurate?

Anyway, it kind of suprised me to find that I can only install a maximum of 2 gigs of RAM. Is this because of my OS or my motherboard?

When I went to the suggestions as to what I could buy I was surprised at how inexpensive the memory was. It listed 2GB kit (1GBx2) DDR2 PC2-5300 CT576506 as the "Best" option, but this only came to $55.99.

What are my options as far as upgrading the notebook given all of this information? Could I somehow upgrade to a 64 bit OS and then have the option of installing 4 gigs of RAM, or am I stuck with a maximum of 2? Is there a possibility of obtaining Dual Channel support? Is there a better alternative set of RAM that I could purchase from Newegg? What are your guys' suggestions?

It only allows 2GB on that mainboard. The limit is the board itself, not the OS.
Saphalline can explain dual channel but I believe that feature depends on the mainboard as well.

I'm not getting much info on HP's site using just "dv6000". You got any more info?

If it's an older Centrino Duo model, then those specs look accurate. Standard i915xM-based mobo, no dual-channel support, max of 1GB per slot. Only the newer i945xM and i965xM mobile chipset series support more grandiose features such as 2GB per slot and dual-channel support.

It's a Pavillion dv6000t to be exact, and yes, it's a Core Duo (not Core 2).

So what can I get from Newegg that'll make the most use of my slots? Does this look reasonable?

Edit: One more thing. It might be important to note that I have a Geforce Go 7400 in here which shares system memory. I want to make sure that I'm getting all I can out of the whole shared memory arrangement.

Thanks!

Yes, quite. Amazing prices on this stuff these days. No reason you can't get a Vista-equipped portable to run just fine at less than $50, eh? :p ;)

It's a little ridiculous considering that they charge over twice that when you order the thing. :o
