Hi.
:)

My mediaplayer does not want to look at network drives(drives on another PC on the home network), so I am wondering if anyone still maps drives to a drive letter anymore?

I know XP kinda does this for you anyway, listing drives as network folders under MY NETWORK PLACES, but I would need the drive letter, to show up under the drives list for the local host, rather then as network folders/shares.

Is this still possible, or am I misunderstanding?

Essentially, I want specific drives on specific machines, to show up as a drive-letter under explorer, so that as far as the local host is concerned, they are drives in this machine, not network resources.

My hope is that if I can do that, the mediaplayer program will then be able to see them and play files from them, and XP will take care of making these network drives look like local drives...

Am I making any sense, or have I totally lost the plot?
:p

Open "My Computer" click on Tools at top of the page, from the menu choose Map network drive.

Also Make sure you check the Box "Reconnect On Logon"

This will allow you to maintain the drives and or shared folders across the network after a shutdown of each / any system connected

It will however slow down the boot process because it Must check each network drive for access

One Note here.
if a mapped network drive is not available at boot / logon
That drive letter is blocked from future use until it is disconnected using the same process at above to map a network drive

This is what it will look like in explorer
Note the last two drives Y and Z

Lovely.
Thanks very much, guys!
I appreciate the photo too - lets me see what to expect.

Will try this soon, and post back here, if any problems.

BTW..

If you have Vista on the network somewhere an play a video or start media player under vista
A second vista system that is running will detect it automatically and ask if you want to setup sharing between them..

Yes this annoying feature? can be turned OFF on each system as it happens

Ye gods...
:(

No I don't use Vista on ANY machine on my home network, and can't ever see me making the move - Vista is just too much of a pain in the bum(for me).

IT WORKS!!!

There is still an error, in that if the mediaplayer tries to autoplay the next file on the NETWORK drive, the application crashes.

However, this is an application bug.
I have sent them an e-mail.

Files once selected, play fine across the network drive though.
:)

Thanks.
