This is driving me crazy. I am running WIN ME in my pc somehow it started to freeze when I tried to use MSN messenger 7.0. The problem got so bad that when I started the pc it went on a continuous cycle of POST then the window logo and the POST again. I tried to use GO BACK but it did not solve the problem. The pc then started to say "windows protection errot restart your pc" or to show the blue screen of dead listing different codes each times I hitted the enter key.I decided to reinstall the OS. It went quite well , I can use the pc but when I tried to upgrade from the INTERNET EXPLORER 5.5 to INTERNET EXPLORER 6.0 I can not do it.By the way I want to use IE EXPLORER only to be able to use MSN 7.0 When I try to run set up for IE6.0 it says tha not all components were installed it recommend to close the program and try again.I close the program and when I try to run it it says that the system did not finish the previous installation and that a RESTART is needed. I restart the pc and when I try to run the insstallation of IE6.0 it says again that a restart is needed and this keeps happening no matter how many times I restart the pc when I try to run the set up it says the same.
I installed the WINME to see if this solved the problem but with no luck , whenever I try to install the IE6.0 it keeps saying that a restart is needed.
Itried to run the set up once more closing all the program leaving running only explorer. It again keep asking me for a restar but no a mesagge saying the followin components wer not installed "offline browsing pack , browser customization , advanced authoring , vector graphic rendering (VML0)"
Any help will be appreciated.

Are you trying to install on-line or have you got the full IE installer on the PC. The latter is preferable in my experience but it is a biggish download. http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=msie

Well I downloaded it directly from MSN but to be on the safe side I downloaded again from your link but no luck. Keeps telling me that the upgrade was not completed and that a restart is needed. Something that I have observed is that the installation bar jump from 1 % to 85% and then it completes the process but one of the time that I tried to install it it got to 72% and the finished the process on this ocassion i got the message about the items not installed after this I have not received this message anymore

It again keep asking me for a restar but no a mesagge saying the followin components wer not installed "offline browsing pack , browser customization , advanced authoring , vector graphic rendering (VML0)"If this resulted in an installation that will fire-up IE6 that should be all that is required to allow MSN7 to be installed. The other components may or may not be capable of being added by running setup again but are not mandatory to run IE.
It is always a good idea to have nothing else running when installing programs.

The problem with this is that it does not install INTERNET EXPLORER 6.0 . The pc keeps internet explorer 5.5. I have try to install it close to 10 times now, as this is a "straight foward" process I am lost as what to do now.

It's a bit weird - I have done this in WinME loads of times with no problems. Did you do a clean reinstall of the OS or was it an install over the old installation?

How about trying this:
1. Go to "Start->Run->msconfig->Diagnostic Startup->Restart in "Normal" mode", and running the installation file within that environment.
2. After the installation and restart into diagnostic mode, restart in "Normal Startup".
At one time I always did installations there, so I know it to be trouble free.
Were all the service packs and updates applied before attempting the install?

I installed over the old OS because there are tons of thing that I do not want to get rid off otherwise believe me I would have done a clean install long time ago.

I would think there is some intrinsic corruption that isn't done away with by reinstalling over. By all means try running scandisk or look for malware or other software that could be interfering.
You might want to try repairing IE5 before attempting an upgrade: http://www.jsifaq.com/SF/Tips/Tip.aspx?id=1309

I try following the step in your link but when I go to ADD/REMOVE there is only one item reading INTERNET EXPLORER when I hit delete taht is all that happens it was deleted and no repairing option was given also the pc asked for a restart.

Followed all your instructions to the t and no luck. The same thing happened the program reported not being totally installed asked for a reboot when I did it and try to run the set up again it repeated that a previous set up was not finished and that a reboot was needed.......again

"there are tons of thing that I do not want to get rid of"
Are these data files, and/or programs?
Could you save the data files off the partition and then do a clean reinstall of Windows and programs?

Maybe that is my only solution. One piece of the puzzle to see if this might have something to do with my problem (althought I do not think so). By error on my part, this pc have a dual boot when you turn it on , it ask you if you want to run WIN-XP set up or if you wanto to use WIN-ME. I was planning of coming here to ask how to get rido of the winxp set up but kept postponing it maybe this is causing my headache? Thank you

If you decide on a clean reinstall...
I suggest that you...
1. Keep all data files off the various OS/Windows partitions.
2. Make image backups at strategic points along the way as you move forward, and keep a written log of the sequence of all the software changes made on each date.
3. If in moving forward something goes wrong with the software [not all changes are always good], just restore the most recent image backup, bearing in mind what the log shows.
4. If that doesn't produce a fix, "jump back" to the next most suitable image.
One of them should take you back to a time when all was well, and is again, so that you can then move forward better prepared to avoid what is causing the problem.
5. If you have a good working system of software, surely it MUST be possible to successfully install something that's known to be OK.

i would just download firefox and forget IE. firefox is a lot simpler and has a great community forum. that is unless you use a program or rely on IE for something firefox cannot provide.

Well to be able to use MSN messenger you NEED IE 6.0 and that is what I need.
Ummm....is there any particular reason you need MSN?
Could you get by with scrapping it for something like this (http://www.pidgin.im/)?

I installed pidgin , thank you for the link it is working fine so far. I am a very stubborn person and it is driving me crazy what happened with the installation of IE 6.0 in my pc. Has anyone experienced this same kind of problem before?
IE screwing up an update (or something else) and being impossible to repair...yep, it used to be fairly common under 9x because the 'roll back' options weren't all that great. Under XP it is less of of a problem because XP has better system file protection.

You make the changes from My Computer (aka Windows Explorer) in order to make global changes to the viewability of hidden files. If you follow the route indicated you should get the dialog box shown in the attachment.

You mentioned you want to keep IE so you can continue to use the MSN product. If the problem is the upgrade to IE 6.x, then run all updates and service releases for the IE 5.5 product first. In addition, reset all web settings under the IE Tools menu to remove add ons and plugins that may have corrupted the IE software. Hope this helps.
