What does it mean when you hear a machine gun sound and the bright blue screen says dumping physical memory? I'm on windows 2000 professional, ie, @home cable.

As far as I can find, it will help a lot if you know the exact error message, which should be at the top of the "BSOD" as it's called. It usually means the computer has done something very bad...usually it's necessary to reboot.
Frank Cauldron (http://www.worldowindows.com/w2000/stop_errors.htm) has some pretty good info, most I can find is related to NT, not 2000, but it's the same general idea. The BSOD means the system really crashed.
