A month and a half ago my hard drive started to make weired clicking noises and the windows would freeze. After a long time of clicking it would show me a blue screen and shut off or restart. There were periods of a week or a few days where it would work totally fine and then days that it took me 20 min to turn it on cause I have to keep shutting it off. People told me my hard drive was going bad so I had to replace it.

I have two HDs. On the BIOS it says "Primary Slave Status BAD Backup and Replace" but my Windows is on my Master HD so I think if it freezes and shuts down then thats the one that is corrupted.

How do I make sure I replace the right one?

I bought a new hard drive a week ago. Tried for a few hours to replace it but I couldnt. I tried the Master first, then I tried the slave, then All by itself, then combinations and none of them would start anything up. There would just be a flashing line on a black plane and thats it. So i went back to my original setup and this clicking is driving me crazy.

It also says something about if an HD is greater than 136gigs then I need to have A windows with SP2 or do something Manually with DOS.

Why would windows matter if Im replacing the Master Hard Drive?

The CD that comes with the new HD gives me an error when I try to boot with it once the new HD is in place inside my computer. I dont want to take this to a computer repair man and have to pay him to replace it.

My ultimate question is " Does anyone see anything I am doing wrong here or something I have missed?" This often causes me to lose things Im working on, like essays or art in Photoshop and stuff. Thanks for any help, i really want to solve this. Thanks for reading this long post.

Need more info about your system. Specs, OS version, drive topology.

I tried just switching the Master HD with the new one, took out the jumpers and connected the cable and started the computer again. And it just said VAIO and then went to a black screen with a flashing line and thats it. I tried to launch with the CD and it started something but gave me an error.

I tried to switch it for the Slave Drive also and I got some other Error Loading OS message. It was all a big mess really.

Well... yes... that's to be expected. A new HDD has nothing on it. So if you disconnect your Windows HDD, then the OS won't load because it's not there anymore.

Ok, so what are all these HDD's we're talking about here? Manufacturers? Capacities? Which one is new, old Windows, and old slave?

Ok, the problem is fixed haha. I just went in and disconnected the cables and power to my Slave drive and now i turned the computer on and theres no complications what so ever. So im gonna install my new HD as a new Slave drive and im pretty sure that would work out ok.
