ATT wants users to switch to their DSL or U-Verse services, so they have raised the price for dial up service to "encourage" users to switch.

So if you are in areas where no DSL/U-Verse is offered, you either get to pay the higher ATT fee or have to switch to providers like NetZero, AOL, or others.

SBC is now AT&T.

S.B.C. = Sheety Business Corporation.

thats like M$ and 98, all this encouragement is overwhelming :rolleyes:

and the one i wouldnt have thought would have changed was AOL
but AOL is a good company now in my opinion.

Well, that's nice...Verizon won't be far behind. And then most of the smaller/independent dial ups that buy their lines off of the telcos will have to up their rates.

Now, if they'd just get off their dead asses and light up all the fiber they have running all over the place...

Case in point...in theory Verizon is offering their fios service in my area...but I can't get a definitive answer as to whether or not I can actually get it. For those who don't know...Verizon's fios is a 20M synchronous service (20M up/20 M down). But to do this, they skipped DSL. My options are dial up, FIOS (if really available) and wireless ISP (currently 2M service for $30/month...gee I wonder which I'd go for....hmmm).

But, many in this area are faced with no other choice than dial up...and even that has very limited choices. In fact AOL doesn't even have toll free coverage in the entire area (NetZero might, but I seem to rembember they didn't either...and if they don't the exchanges they don't cover are likely the same ones AOL doesn't). So of the one or two local dial up ISPs that do cover the area, Verizon and maybe one of the 'nationals' there aren't all that many choices...if Verizon were to raise rates the net effect would be to cut a whole bunch of people off because there is no way in hell that dial up service, especially around here is worth $32/month! (Yeah, many dial up customers around here max out at 28.8k!)
