Hey everyone. I know not everyone cares, but Opera 5.0 is out, and avaiable for free download at www.downloads.com (http://www.downloads.com)

For those who don't know what it is, it is an alternative web browser. It runs super great on older systems, and doesn't freeze and crash like IE, and it is quick for bringing up pages, unlink Netscape.

It has been a premium service that cost 39 dollars, till now. Now it is free (if you can handle the little banner ads, otherwise you still gotta pay 39 bucks, unless you know where to find the crack, but we can't discuss that on these forums http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif ).

I loved opera 4.02, but I found some pages wouldn't work in it, and some of them were work pages, so I ended up abandoning it. But, Opera 5.0 runs all my work pages fine and dandy, and i have yet to find a page that won't function in it. I dont' know how plugins will work, like Media player and real player, but I will be sure to test them out as soon as possible.

If you got time to download the 9.3 meg file, do it. I am so excited. Finally, I get a web browser at work that doesnt' crash crash crash.... Yipee!!!!

Just to clarify, the 9mb download includes the Sun Java plugin. Without Java, Opera 5 is only a 2mb download. Opera discussion are are news://news.opera.no

True, Opera itself doesn't take more than 2 megs to download, but you can't display most pages without the sun java plugin. I would not recommend using it without that plugin.

Not to be argumentative ReddDogg but you *can* display most pages without the java plugin. The *vast* majority of web pages do not use java. (And a great majority of those that do shouldn't http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/tongue.gif

Hey, I just noticed we got a 'dDog' in common! What's your pedigree? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Thumbs up on Opera! I'm using it on my Linux box. The linux version is only beta and still has some quarks but it's a nice browser. I especially like the ability to choose between graphics or no graphics with the click of a button on the browser itself.
