When I shut down my PC, I get the message "Windows is shutting down your computer." It never does shut it down. It just hangs.

I have that happen sometimes to Jim. First off, is this windows 95 or 98? I have heard of a patch from microsoft that is supposed to fix that problem, I just never have gone to get it. This is one advantage of windows Millenium, it has always shut down for me, It never freezes, and it runs without reboot much longer. Downfalls have been few and far between, one being that their default driver for an LT winmodem isn't worth a crap, but oh well, that is what www.driverguide.com (http://www.driverguide.com) is for. Anyway, check out microsofts updates page to see if you can find that patch. Maybe someone else knows it's exact location.

The good old wait-for-me-for-days Micro$oft site has these items in their Knowledge base:
Q196008 (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q196/0/08.ASP)

Q202633 (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q202/6/33.ASP)

Q231666 (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q231/6/66.ASP)

Q239887 (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q239/8/87.ASP)

Q238096 (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q238/0/96.ASP)

That should keep you busy for a while and might, with a bit of luck, answer your question...

Microsoft Knowledge Base...aren't those terms mutually exclusive? hehehe

I have had that problem as of lately too when I try to reboot or even try to shut down. The bigger problem I have is that when I shut down my computer it doesn't shut down, it boots back up. I have downloaded a patch that was supposed to fix it, but that didn't work. I've been told that its either a bad power supply or its something with Windows 98 (I have 2nd edition). Im thinking of going to Windows ME...could that fix it?

Go to the Win98 update page. There is a shut down patch which works. Since that upgrade my systems have shut down flawlessly. Prior at least one would hang 1 out of three shut downs.

I couldn't find the places on Microsoft for the shutdown patch for Windows98. However, I had a similar problem, went into "msconfig" and disabled "Fast Shutdown". This seems to work for me so far. I guess that Fast Shutdown must be fast because I will do a hardware reset right away when it hangs which is faster than going through a complete shutdown :-)

I'm having the same problems with my Win98 2nd Edition PC 'all of a sudden' not wanting to shutdown. I have not installed anything new and according to my virus checker and firewall, I'm virus free. (I did have a kak.hta virus last month though, but it's been cleaned and removed.)

I've tried just about everything you can imagine including going to the 'Microsoft Knowledge Base'(uugghhh) with no luck. I've heard of the same 'shutdown patch' and thought I found it & downloaded/installed it but either I found the wrong file or it just did not work. I've been looking at, but so far not touching, the options in my msconfig files. Does anyone think there may be something there that I could manipulate to help this problem? Actually, I'm not picky, I'd appreciate any direction/help in any regard - not just related to my msconfig files http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

For those with win98SE and this shutdown problem, READ this article (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q238/0/96.ASP)
It is not a simple matter of applying the patch. You have to go through a series of troubleshooting steps to track down the problem. These steps are outlined in the article. Following this article has solved all the shutdown problems I've ever troubleshooted. On one machine it was a problem with a setting in the bios regarding real mode. On another the patch fixed the problem.

Good Luck
