What is the current song you're listening to right now? Or, what is the last song you listened to?
"Eat Me, Drink Me" - Marilyn Manson

It's very doubtful that you would like any of the songs that I listen to and enjoy. I was born in 1931. I think that most people enjoy the music that was playing when they were growing up. I listened to the music in the late 40s and 50s. As they say, "To each his own." By the way, that was the name of a song when I was growing up.

The last song I listen to would be off the CD: "Christmas Eve and Other Stories" Artist(s) Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

"Eat Me, Drink Me" - Marilyn MansonSorry, don't know this singer's works... Strange name for a song...is this from her seasonal specials or Christmas album??

Actually, his real name is Brian Warner, except he takes the name Marilyn Manson to combine a name of what he considers to be the ultimate and most disturbing dualism of American culture, Marilyn (Monroe) Manson (Charles Manson). The genre is metal and to the average person thinks he's a goth/someone who kills people/etc. etc. and base him on his appearance. He's actually an intelligent artist, (both in the music and painting aspects), and hates mainstream and corruption in politics and such.

I'm going to take a guess and say that the answer to that question is, "No."
But, I've been known to be wrong. If "he"(?) ;) would have, I don't think it would be any of the traditional music that we generally hear.

I don't think it would be any of the traditional music that we generally hear. For someone who played rhythm guitar and sang lead vocals in our band 70-71' you'd think I'd be a bit more aware of the music scene... Alas, I didn't venture out much beyond the more melodic sounds, CSNY (Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young), the Doobie Brothers, Eagles, etc. I absoulutely love tight harmony...Righteous Brothers' kinda stuff...
Even today, if I hear a band play and the instruments drown out the vocals I'm outta there... :p
I enjoyed when they were doing that "unplugged" stuff where the bands were doing their stuff acoustically with the vocals...I think because it made it tough to "drown out" the real deal...

123456, would you answer a question for me? Please don't misunderstand, I am not criticizing anyone, I'm just trying to understand. I have heard of Marilyn Manson, and he apparently has a large group of followers. I could never understand why. He chose the last name of Charles Manson who was convected of massacring a group of people in cold blood; and he feels no remorse. I understand that he has some gripes against society. Well, join the crowd as we all have a few gripes. However, we don't all go out and slaughter a bunch of people because of it. As I said, if you like to listen to Marilyn Manson, I am not criticizing you for it. Just help me to understand why. I realize that you and I look at things differently, but I do have an open mind. So, see if you can make me understand why anyone would like him. You don't have to if you don't want to; you don't own me any explanation as to why you feel as you do. I'm just asking. Have a good day.

One of those songs that I've got to hear once or twice during the holiday season. But more than once or twice is way too much...
I looked it up this morning because my wife and I were driving home from a Christmas party yesterday listening to Christmas music on the radio, hoping we'd hear it.

We have a radio station here in VA that is playing all Christmas music from the start of December to the end of the month so we have been listening to that. All kinds of music, from everyone you can think of, even people who murder some songs!:p
We are in our 50s now so I guess we listen to stuff from our parents, mine were into jazz, Dad was a drummer, and our growing up years 60s 70s 80s. We are the kinda in between generation I think.
Love the Hippo song, who ever sings that has one dickens of a good trained voice and it sticks in your head too!
Grandma got run over is now a ring tone on our house phones for the season! Funniest thing I ever heard, even tho I am a grandma now! Love it! Forgot the medication part tickles me to death!:D
I think we just finished listening to Bing Crosby White Christmas. Now that's my idea of a Christmas song. As well as Nat King Cole, Chestnuts Roasting. Ever heard Reba McEntier (sp?) do Oh Holy Night? Woman will chill you to the bone and make you cry! Just beautiful!
Merry Christmas My Dears, Hugs to you All!!

Hey, malcore, thanks for the recommendation! That's got a nice funky groove to it. If you haven't already dug Robert Randolph & the Family Band (http://www.robertrandolph.net/), you should check them out. I saw them on Austin City Limits some time ago; the music is good, but the live show that they put on is outstanding and full of energy.
When I get off of work tonight, I'll put some Christmas music on my iPod for the ride to my parents' house tomorrow. Two songs that will definitely make it (probably my two favorite Christmas songs): "Fairytale of New York" by The Pogues featuring Kirsty MacColl, and "I Believe in Father Christmas" by Greg Lake.

I don't have any problem with Marilyn Manson; this is mostly due to not having affectionate regard neither for the Catholic church (or any Christian denomination) and not having an idyllic image of society in which all members love each other; i lack the latter since i think much of the culture around me includes a passive type of hatred for each other, and where a society-level love does exist, it is exclusive of an innocent segment of society, such as the phenomenon racial narcissism, which on account of one race excludes a segment on account of racial features, for example. Of course I don't support the passive hatred, but I also don't support restrictive love on account of things like religious belief, anatomic pigmentation, cultural features, etc.

I don't know what you're asking. I'd like to answer your question, but... Dark side of things? Do I think something has merit? What do I support? Can you be more specific?
Whyzman
12-25-2007, 05:02 PM
Can you be more specific?Sure. You pointed out things you do not support...latter portion of the quote which I highlighted. And, that you do not have an affectionate regard for the Catholic church or any Christian denomination, lack an idyllic image of society...with a detailed description of its faults.
From the description earlier in the thread of what Marilyn Manson represents, which you say you don't have a problem with, I haven't been able to grasp onto anything positive.
So, I was curious as to what things in life/society that you might find positive and therefore support.
alternate
12-26-2007, 08:23 AM
The earlier description wasn't that Marilyn Manson represents mindless slaughter; it was clearly mentioned he doesn't kill people; rather, he seems to reject some of things that have been accepted and also to point to those things that have happened that aren't exactly the fruits of them, such as Charles Manson and his actions in the past. Granted, he chose the name (charles) Manson, but his music and his interviews don't seem to suggest that he wants to kill people like Charles Manson did; evidently he wants more to play music for people; he's more a follower of atheism and anti-christianity. Sure his thinking is probably not the most elegant, but whose is? He seems simply to be pointing to certain things in contrast to what the Catholic church would point to, which for them might be evidence of Jesus or what not.
I also didn't label those things I listed as faults, either. Also, use of the word 'positive' is a question itself; to some, it means God, Jesus, the Bible, etc.; but there's nothing inherent to the word 'positive' that implies them, however. I also want to mention that when I said I don't have an idyllic image of society in which everyone loves each other, it is because I don't think it would be empirically accurate--such as for those things I listed. I mentioned no affectionate regard for Catholithic church, and I also don't mean one for marilyn manson. I am not against the Catholic church apart from my own membership; it has a lot of useful lessons that are not limited to members of the church.
Regarding a question of what I support, I think instead that I'm not sure having an opinion somethings about things really helps; to support something is to be against something that doesn't support it, usually. For example, consider supporting God when there are so many American aethists who don't mean any harm to you and when there isn't an absolute reason to support the first thing. As a christian (or muslim), you're often for no other reason than having accepted the label christian (muslim), against men who like to lick men, for example. By this last clause, I'm not saying I would like to do that; it's just an example. :)
But anyway, Christians (or muslims) often see things they want to and don't often look at the inconsistencies in their organization, including things like some things in the history of their church. Even today, a lot of people i know who are Christians often have their agreeabilities shifted in a way that makes them more friendly to christians and less so to people are not, say muslim; more bluntly, there is tension, in fact, for no reason other than the differences in the labels (and the ramifications) they chose for themselves; I don't mean to center my example on religious groups, but also it's quite applicable to different races.
Moreover, for the question about what I actually support, I find appeal in the manner in which things have actually turned out empirically; the effect is the diversity that exists--since it happened, i admire it enough, considering in contrast everything to be just one way. Personally I am agnostic with leaning toward existence of deity.

Consider the lyric from "the beautiful people":
"...Theres no time to discriminate, Hate every [individual] Thats in your way..."
In a certain context, where he acknowledges discriminating hatred, the lyric can be interpreted to mock the discrimination by some parties and as taking on character of a belief that sees little point in discrimination. Sure, he's talking about this subject of hatred; but it's a subject that the Catholic church would never talk about in sermon candidly; selection of topic that ever gets articulated depends on the speaker.
If anyone didn't know, Marilyn Manson was raised catholic.

It's never the wrong season to bash Christians I guess...
Marilyn Manson is doing exactly what it takes to sell CDs. He is nowhere near as anomalous as he is being presented here. The question is not "What's up with Marilyn Manson?" He's following the formula that has been the status quo since the propagation of television. The question is, what's up with the kids who are paying eighteen bucks per CD for music that my dog could have written? (I'll give you a hint, they're spending their parent's money.)
