or something else. The problem is that from time to time my internet connection slows to a crawl. I reboot and it works great. Slows reboot and we are working again. I really believe at this point that something is causing the windows registry to become corrupted. Not sure what would do this but looking for some more detailed possibilities. I am still using dial up and using Windows XP with sp2. Also machine has the latest updates from MS. This problem has been going on for quite some time and I have been experimenting to see what works best to correct problem and so far the reboot appears to immediately correct the problem. I have the latest driver from US Robotics. I have swapped out modems. 2 of the same type and 1 Lucent model. The Lucent model was much slower speed wise and removed but also exhibited the same problem. Its dial up I know and live in town and have been really pleased with the dial up and don't really feel thats the main problem. I believe that it software related. Something is not letting the modem not do its job. Looking for additional thoughts. Thanks

Could be spiral death (http://www.56k.com/trouble/disconn.shtml#v42).

Sounds like a soft modem. You could try a hardware modem - external serial or one of the more recent Intel PCI 536ep chipset such as http://www.gearxs.com/gearxs/product_info.php?products_id=3393

I used to have the exact same problems with a lucent modem until I changed it.

Just a quick update. I ordered the suggested modem. Should have it tomorrow and will try and see if there is any improvement. Will continue to experiment!

I have been using this new modem for a while now and it appears at this point that the problem may be solved. I see that it is a Conextant chipset and does perform better.

Hopefully that will do the trick. I remember my own elaborate attempts to try tweaking settings, changing drivers and so on and so on over much too long a period and once I got a new inexpensive modem all such problems were resolved.
