hello all,
I recently read that WinXP has new anti-piracy features and cannot be installed on more than one machine, good http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif ..........but I was wondering if it can be re-installed more times on the same machine? and what if I change mobo or hard drive? do i have to buy a new OS everytime I add a new SDRAM module? According to Microsoft...no (to the new OS), but they aren't saying what combinations of hardware they are keeping track of, and according to what I've read you'll be able to re-install it in the same machine but you may have to call in for an "activation code".

There are a few articles about it on Zdnet (http://xlink.zdnet.com/cgi-bin/texis/xlink/xlink/search.html?Uch=&Utext=WinXP&db=zd)

Those are all issues that haven't really been worked out yet...once XP is activated, either online or by calling and getting an activation # (you have 30 days to do so) it will work without further involvement from M$...

But say 6 months later you buy a new mobo, or hd...you'll need to reinstall and reactivate...supposedly, M$ won't have a problem with that, but your electronic activation may fail, so you'll have to call them and probably have to convince them that you are only installing it on one machine...

The biggest part that sucks is that at some point, M$ will undoubtedly stop supporting XP and then what happens to the activation process?? And yes, this will be after they have introduced some new OS, but there are still users out there running 3.1 and 95...I wonder if anyone will be able to use XP over 5 years from now...

Inevitably, someone will crack the activation process, but you shouldn't have to worry about that with a product you have purchased...

Oh, and the other irritating part is that volume purchasers (big companies) don't have to contend with activation at all, just the little guys who buy one copy at a time...

M$ is just like any other company...they charge, and do, whatever the market will bear...

.........well I started to approach this a little dif way but I think Ill just say, Billy boy is pushing his luck hehe

EDIT: I also think that if XP hangs on to this kind of BS, only bested by ME it will be the shortest lived OS in history..........

At some point (very soon) MS is going to have to come up with something just a little bit better............

Unless XP has some "Real Meat" in it, and has some "Extreme Definite Benefits" over 98, who is going to buy it? I say only people that don't know any better, and I think the public in general is starting to get just a little bit smarter and wiser then MS gives them credit for...........but they will soon find out, and its about time if you ask me........

What I meant by what I said is hopefully less confusing then the contemplation of the question that led to the confusion in the 1st place.......

At work we were debating to switch to 2000 or wait for XP. Then I read an article from a microsoft rep, that said.

"Some installation problems may occur with software and hardware devices made before the year 2000."

If you need to read it again, and tell me how many people are going to jump all over it?!?!

------------------
"MS-DOS, the only Microsoft OS that doesn't crash, or have bugs. Maybe they should have someone else write Operating Systems for them again."

There are no stupid questions, just stupid people.
