hey gang...

while working on this (non-compaq) pc..............

win98 (4.10.1998)- isn't this not se?? has to be 1st edition.

AMD-K6 3D
64mbs sdram, 350MHz-

#1) there was an old 14.4 modem (still working) that he wanted to upgrade to 56k.

I removed the old modem and plugged in a :

modem= Rockwell
RS56~PCI
R6787-12

9844 B65503.8

rebooted, winblows didn't 'see' it.. PnPray did not find it.

I did 'add new hardware'...... I cannot find any drivers for this.. what do you guys think ??

#2) very annoying, when this machine boots up messages appear on the desktop that must be clicked to continue loading: "driver 15_16 W95vxd out of date", and- " AC97 audio controller was not detected- all controls will be disabled."

I have gone and downloaded the newset available drivers for " AOpen FX-3D Sound Controller"... went to upgrade drivers section and had them on floopy, win says that I already have the latest driver for this... why does it upon boot keep saying that it doesn't??

sound (btw) works........

sea,

I had that same problem with a rockwell modem once, a friend of mine pointed me to a site that had all the available drivers for all known rockwell modems and "after 2 or 3 tries" with different drivers I finally got it. Dont have a link to that site , but point Is if you look around Im sure you can find the right drivers. When you finally find the "correct" drivers the OS will see the modem......as far as the sound Im a little confused as to what exactly has happened there but it sounds like the resources for the sound card have somehow changed and youve got a bit of confusion going on there...at any rate "I think" to force new drivers on that thing....if you 1st change the sound card to "something that its not" itll say this is not designed for your hardware do you want to continue and tell it yes.... then go in the inf folder and remove the appropriate *.ini file for those old drivers (if you dont remove the ini file then itll just use the old drivers all over again).........then when you reboot itll ask you for a drivers disk for the newly found hardware that its going to find and you "should" be able to use the drivers you want to use.....how many sound cards are showing up in device mgr btw?, and how many unknown devices do you have?......

Hope this helps, I know my responce is a little less then the 100% answer but without searching for those drivers myself thats about all I can offer from what I understand is the problem (which I may be a little confused on that issue also heh)

Edit: If you have the right drivers but the sound card is not using the exact resources that it is expected to, then the sound will work but itll keep telling you something is wrong..........if that makes sence?

----------------
----------------
What I meant by what I said is hopefully less confusing then the contemplation of the question that led to the confusion in the 1st place.......

Hey Sea.... When you use the "add new hardware" wizard choose the "have disk" option.(I belive you have to "choose from list" to get this option and of course you have to have the drivers.) You'll then have the choice of which com port you want to install it to.

For the sound card driver problem check out this Microsoft KB article : q188171 (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q188/1/71.asp)

edit: try here for the modem drivers : http://members.cnx.net/reboot/modems/
These ones marked "SoftK56V_B2.x_Vx.xx (Rockwell HSF) Downloads version 2.12.00 for Windows " should be the ones you need but check my results first.

Good luck http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Here (http://808hi.com/56k/) is a site that has all sorts of modem troubleshooting tips and drivers links.

Is the wait for dial tone in mode properties checked? If it isn't try checking it...

Everything I can find indicates that is a software modem, most sites say it's a chipset with HSF in the numbers, and at least one says minimum P-233 and 32MB RAM. That means it must be installed using the exe file in the drivers, not by the Add Hardware Wizard. Oh, Rockwell RS-56 is the chipset, I've found at least a half dozen manufacturers that use it in their modems, the driver should ideally be specific to the manufacturer.

Yes, I'm aware that you know most of that already, just reminders...

No dial tone when you know the line is good usually means the modem is deceased...or the drivers are not working right. Most often it's a dead modem. Or did the "Wait for Dialtone" option work?

Did you make sure to remove all modems listed in Device Manager in Safe Mode? Could be ghost drivers lurking around and "helping out"...

For the other problem(s) have you checked Device Manager in Safe Mode for duplicates? That's the first thing I always look for. The MSKD article Ghost posted looks like it's the best bet for a fix, but remove the card from Safe Mode, and get 'em all.

Good Morning Sea !!

I use hyperterminal to troulbshoot modem problems. To connect to your modem via hyperterminal follow these steps.

Start Hyperterminal (found in Accessories , communications)

Enter a name for the connection (for example, Test) in the Name box.

Click an icon for the connection in the Icon box, and then click OK.

In the Connect Using box, click Direct To Com X (where X is the port
your modem is connected to) and then click OK.

Verify the settings on the Port Settings tab and then click OK.

On the File menu, click Properties. On the Settings tab, click ASCII
Setup.

Click the Send Line Ends With Line Feeds and Echo Typed Characters
Locally check boxes to select them.

Click OK, you can now type AT commands.

That's it when you quit HyperTerminal you'll be prompted to "Save session <name>?" click Yes if you want to save the session setup.

The AT commands I use to troubleshoot are:

AT ( the modem should respond with "OK". It should always respond to most commands with an "ok" if it doesn't the modem is either dead or not setup for that com port. I have the best results with modems on COM 4)

ATDTxxxxxxx ( where xxxxxxx= the phone number you wish to dial. The modem should go off hook and dial that number. If it dials but you hear no dail tone then the modem either isn't waiting for dial tone before dialing or can't grap the phone line.If it's the latter the modem should be replaced. If it's the former then use the following AT command to change the "wait time" for dail tone.)

ATS6=10 ( This sets the modem to wait ten seconds for dail tone before dialing. You can use 2-255. After you set this S register to 10 try the ATDT command again.)

There are lots more AT command you could use but this should be enough to get you started. Don't forget to also try another phone cable in case that is causing a problem. And most import don't waste alot of time troubleshooting a "software" modem. Sometimes those puppies just don't work with your computer setup no matter what you do.

EDIT Are you still having problems with installing the new sound card drivers?

Good Luck http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

and a very good morning to you!!

this moment I am working on the sound card driver issue. ( modem will be next)

I have done as suggested on the MSKB link you provided.

am at "update Device Driver wizard"....... (already did the win95 exe. in dos)

.....@ 83% it STOPS. (copying files) and says " Please insert the disk labeled 'Windows 98 CD-ROM' and then click ok.

I inserted my win98 CD (it is se full version) This does not have the "msopl.drv" is NOT found on the CD.. (or on a win95 CD I have as well)

what now??????

stuck at 83% !!!!!!

ok.. my whole purpose with this sound card issue was to get the error messages (out of date drivers warning) to go... I have done this.

now in device Manager, in "Sound, video and game controllers" it says: "Analog Devices AD1816 Sound Controller" with no yellow marks.

but there is no sound though.. (warnings are gone but no sound either...)

probably need to remove this again and redo it..

and there is something else too... I get a line when booting up that says there is an error in my Sys.config on line 11??

running sysedit in C:\CONFIG.SYS it says:

" rem \ device=c:\adisound\dos_util\AD1815_6.SYS/L0=B220B388B501015D1D0/L1=B330109/L2=B200/L3=B300

DEVICE=C:\CDROM\IDE.SYS/D:IDECD000/UDMA /Q

That file is located in the driver16.cab file. Read this Microsoft KB article to find out how to extract the file or orthers you may need.

Q129605 (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q129/6/05.asp?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0&qry=Q129605&rnk=1&src=DHCS_MSPSS_gn_SRCH&SPR=CHS)

EDIT Your sound card will probaly not work without the additional Windows files. I would redo the install following the KB article's steps for extrating any Windows files you may need. For whatever reason the install can't pull that file out of the driver16.cab file. You should make sure that the computer can read the cd. (IE: clean it)
If that doesn't work then extract the file. Windows will still want to first look at the CD for it. Hopefully when it can't find it , it will give you the option to point it to it's location

Also which of those lines is your line "11"?

hehe thanks GH http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

I have gotten rid of the messages (all except one: "! An AC97 audio controller was not detected in your system.
All controls will be disabled."

"unrecognized command in windows config.sys file on line 11." message still appears while booting.

I was hoping you would know what one was "line 11" ..lol

OK I'm betting that it's this line:

MTM ATAPI CD-ROM------------

So I would "rem" that out. As for the AC97 part check the BIOS to see if there are any sound settings there.

in conclusion;

I was able to get the modem drivers to install and it works fine.. many thanks to all that took the time to reply.. especially GH..

the error messages were eliminated also, I have to say that after working on other peoples machines I am sooooooooooooo HAPPY to get back to mine!!!

Even my dentist (who is a friend) he has ALL KINDS of $$.. and a nice P-III 667Mhz.. but his is often problematic too.. and he's no dummy.. hehe

I am very fortunate to have gotten a good one I gues.. and a compaq as well.. everything always works ALL of the time.
