My old computer is an HP pavilion I got in 2003 with XP Pro service pack 2. Recently, it keeps restarting itself. Sometimes it will get to the XP logo screen or the HP logo screen or sometimes all the way to the windows welcome screen, then the screen goes blank and restarts itself and eventually after 4 or 5 times I'd turn it off. So after letting it sit for a day, I came back, turned it on, and I was actually able to use it for about 20 minutes or so then it would restart itself over and over again. I came to the conclusion that it was overheating, took most of it apart and cleaned all the dust out. To no luck, it still continues to restart itself after awhile as if some part is overheating. The hard drive seems fine, it doesn't make any unusual sounds, the processor is on stock speeds and cooling of course. I cleaned up the RAM and the ATI 9600 PRO that's in there and put them back in correctly. After carefully inspecting everything, it looks fine so it doesn't seem like it is a hardware problem. Could there be a problem with the registry or something wrong with the OS? Perhaps a virus of sorts? It seems odd that it restarts itseft at such irratic times, doesn't seem consistent. Any recommendations on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated as I do not now exactly what could be wrong here. Thanks.
