Where can I find a detailed description of the boot sequences of MS OSs. These are really helpful in troubleshooting, but I can't seem to find them.

I've got a machine which loads CD ROM and sound only sometimes and it's very intermittent. I'd like to know when during the boot it is failing to do this, (detection, drivers, etc.) Also, can I step through the complete boot sequence and watch each instruction execute? I know I can hit F8 and do a step by step confirmation, but this only boots to safe mode.

go to start, find, files or folders. Type in "bootlog" (without the quotes)...press enter or click "find now".

you will see three entries.. choose the one that says it's a text file.. open it with notepad or wordpad.

Okay, did that and found this in my bootlog

[0013D851] Loading Vxd = ndis2sup.Vxd
[0013D851] LoadFailed = ndis2sup.Vxd

What does this mean? This is the only "LoadFailed" I found in the log.
Is it a driver?

Got ethernet? NDIS: Network Device Interface Specification defines the software interface which is used by protocol drivers to communicate with the network interface card.

[The preceding was plagiarized from a MS study guide glossary.]

ndis2sup.Vxd almost always fails on most MS machine...it isn't needed and fails because it discovers it isn't needed and shuts down the laoding of itself.....

So much for that. Also found this

INITCOMPLETE = SDVXD
INITCOMPLETEFAILED = SDVXD

Same questions. No network on this machine.

Where are you guys finding this info? I'd like to have the book.

some things we happen to know. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

other's we have to 'find' for people with problems.. this way we learn as well.. (at least that's the case for me)

Google (http://www.google.com/) is where you want to find allot of things, hehe chances are sometimes google will point you right back to this site!

try a search on this sites search engine for many things, you may be surprised.

"Where are you guys finding this info?" For me, it's a case of repetition.

I think I first ran into NDIS when I tried to get Norton Ghost to backup over my LAN. (After many dead ends, I concluded the driver didn't support my newer version of NIC (Network Interface Card)). Then I ran into it when studying for the Network+ exam. Most recently, I noticed a folder named NDIS on the installation floppy for a new NIC.

Repetition is why I keep a few technical magazines on the kitchen table and in the bathroom. I scan a few articles when I have a few minutes. I might comprehend less than half of the material, but a pattern will eventually emerge and the "knowlege" starts soaking in.

Books, webpages, Google, the PC Guide, my site, mjc's site...

A lot of the stuff I come up with is finally stored in the old hair-free cranium, but it took quite a while to get it to stay there...I think it leaks out since there's nothing to keep it in any more...

I also have 2 good sized boxes of books relating to various topics, and several that stay close by for quick reference, and sometimes manage to catch a couple of the folks from the forums on the mIRC channel and we can put our heads together. In addition to those, I have several loose-leaf binders of material I've printed out from various internet sources, those rarely sit untouched for more than a few days...

And don't ask me where Ghost_Hacker comes up with all that info...the guy never fails to amaze me...My guess is he wrote half the books in those two boxes... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

My sources are books, mags,a ton of bookmarked websites, whitepapers and the Micorsoft resource kits and technet CD. The fact that I have no life gives me plenty of time to read all this stuff. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

I have just, out of curiosity, tried the above suggestion and came up with nothing. ????

.............sorry, came up with 'nothing' doing what??

edit: ok, I guess you mean the bootlog tip.

you may have to change explorer settings.

open explorer by pressing the "windows" button (you know.. that useless looking one sitting there- in between Ctrl and Alt??).. press it and the letter "E" on your keyboard at the same time... or just open explorer anyway you feel like. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

click "View"> "Folder Options".

then click the View TAB.

under "hidden"> click "show all files".

follow onscreen instructions.

Um, if we could digress for a moment...

As it turns out, my problem seems to be in the BIOS. I'm trying to flash the upgrade but I've run out of fresh floppies and my A: drive is acting up. Will post back tomorrow with results of the flash if I can kill the rest of these demons.
