Hello all. I have been looking at some software for ripping DVDs to my hard drive. I have done the google search and looked on sourceforge and there are a number of reasonable apps but I would like to know if anyone has any recommendations or concerns.
I do understand the copyright issues involved so I am looking for legitimate stuff here. No pirate or infringement deals.

Thanks
Frank

I have been using DVD Shrink for over a year with no problems

Create backups to your hdd is easy with it
It works best with nero if you want to backup to dvd

I like being able to remove segments from the backup
Like all the extra language files

Thanks Rick
Downloading now. It say supports XP but nothing about Vista. What are your thoughts on that?

Guess I need to read the instructions first:rolleyes:. What I am looking for is something to rip DVDs to my HDD so I can watch them without the disk. I like the ease of use of DVD Shrink, but it is not doing what I am after.

Hmm...never had any problems with DVDShrink myself...especially if you have a virtual drive program to mount the iso files in...

First download and install anydvd from http://slysoft.com
Now download and install clone dvd from http://slysoft.com
Use clonedvd to copy the dvd to your harddrive.

NOTE: You have to have both anydvd and clonedvd installed for this to work.

Thanks david432111. $90.00 seems a bit steep when there are a number of quality products out there for $20 to $40. I obviously would like to stay with freeware and make a donation to someone making a quality product but,....

Check the settings in Dvdshrink
I don't have access to it at the moment ( away from Home)
But I know It makes a copy of the dvd to the hard drive and then allows you to rip it back to dvd

What I do is change the hdd location on each rip
Example
d:\dvd\homemovie
d:\dvd\movietitle
d:\dvd\movietitle

One-click DVD copy is the one I use.
It is VERY simple to use, but costs sixty bucks...

However, I think it is worth it, myself.

You can find it here (www.1clickdvdcopy.com)

I got this full FREE copy of Ashampoo Burning Studio 2008 (http://www.computeractive.co.uk/burningstudio/index).
I like the way this looks and works.
The offer is supposed to have terminated 2007 Nov 8th, but I notice the installation exe file can still be downloaded at the webpage above.

Here's a screenshot...

You should be able to play your ripped VTS files in
WinDVD (http://store.corel.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?partNumber=OL_WD08PLAT&srcid=&pculicenseid=&promocode=0&countryCode=US&storeId=10302&catalogId=10103&langId=-1) although you do have to pay $35 for it. I'm sure I have a plugin for WMP that can do it but I can't seem to find it on the net, and I don't have any ripped DVD's to test either!

I want to thank everyone who has responded so far. Here is where I am at with this-
I have tried and like DVDShrink. Easy to use, fast, simple setup. It does however only create an ISO/TS folder and other then burning back to a new blank DVD/CD, I am at a loss for how to play it back from my HDD. Any help there?
I have found This (http://imtoo.com/dvd-ripper.html) and it works great. Simple, fast, and does exactly what I am looking for. I have used the trial version and it only rips 5 minutes. The full version is $35.00. I don't mind paying, but as previously stated, I would prefer to support freeware/shareware.
I have DL ashampoo and will install and try this weekend but it appears to do the same thing as DVDShrink. I don't know what to do with the ISO
Mike, can you tell me more about this virtual drive prog to mount the ISO in?

Again, thanks for everyones help
Frank

If you don't mind being patient, I ran across a few DVD ripping software from www.giveawayoftheday.com. The only problem is that you have 24 hours to download it, they change the program to download every day, along with dissabling the activation for the product previously offered. Currently they do not have one up, but I'll be sure to say something when they do have a free program to download

I use an old copy of CloneCD to set up the 'virtual drive'...then just riight click on the virtual drive, select 'mount', navigate to the ISO and it will 'autoplay' just like when I insert a DVD into the drive. Just about any virtual drive software will be similar...I use CloneCD because I've had it for nigh on to forever.

The two key things are using one (virtual drive software) that will recognize the ISO format and having the 'actions' set for it to autoplay when you mount the ISO...of course, once mounted you can direct your player of choice to the virtual disk, instead of using autoplay, but that is just one more step.

It does however only create an ISO/TS folder and other then burning back to a new blank DVD/CD, I am at a loss for how to play it back from my HDD. Any help there?

With the DVD ripped to a VIDEO_TS folder on your hard-disk(and renamed to the name of the DVD), using just about any DVD-player software, "Open" the VIDEO_TS.IFO file, which is normally the file which starts the playback of all the DVD files from the beginning of the now virtual "DVD".

You might have to try opening other .IFO files, if there is more then one.

.BUP files are IFO backup files, in case the player can't read the .IFO of the same name for some reason, it will try to start playback by reading the .BUP file, but generally speaking, you ignore the .BUP files...
