I have a desktop and a cable modem with Ethernet cable from modem to PC.
I want to set up wireless router for laptop but I do not want my pc to be wireless. How do I set this up with only one cable modem...Is this possible. Thanks

Welcome to the PC Guide forums!
Yes it is very possible.
You connect the cable modem to the home wireless router's WAN port.
Here is a good wireless router if you have not chosen one yet:

You connect one of the wireless router's switched ports to your PC with an Ethernet patch cable.
Power down everything, plug in the modem, wait for most of the lights to illuminate, then plug in the router, wait a bit for it to come online, then power up your PC.
Go to the Run command, type IPCONFIG and enter, the gateway address there should get you the configuration page of the wireless router. Enter the gateway address into your browser, no www needed. In this page you will need the administrator password, use the default password the first time, then change it to something else. Document the password change, you will need it later for accessing the router.
Test that you can access the Internet.
Go back into the configuration again if all works. Look for Wireless settings>Wireless security.
You set up a security key for the wireless (I suggest WPA) and then save the settings.
You access the wireless and put in the same security key you just created into the laptop.
Test the laptop to see if it connects to the Internet.

Does your cable modem have wireless router capabilities built-in??
What type of modem...have you looked at the documentation??
