My pc got two trojan horse viruses and now my c drive and a drive do not work and I cannot get anything from the CMOS or any commands from dOS do I need a new motherboard or what? What can I do to get it up and running again. I have checked all the cables and tried everything I could imagine except buying anything new.

talk through the order of what happens when you switch on your pc so everyone can see where the first error is occuring and I'm sure people will be able to help, (bit confusing at the moment, mind you i am a bit slow so it may just be me).

If you do not have any virus software that runs from a diskette, you will probably have to reinstall your OS and all the software. The better virus protection programs create a bootable diskette when you install them.
Did you create a Bootable Diskette when you installed Windows? could you borrow one from a friend? You might be able to bring the system up and run virus software from a DOS prompt.
A friend might be able to download something from the internet and put it on a Diskette for you. A simple search should turn up all the sites that sell virus software.
Unless you have a huge amount of software installed and data you do not want to lose, I would suggest reinstalling Windows. Repartition and format your drives first.

I read your post in a hurry, and just realized that you said your A-Drive does not work.
A virus should not keep your A-Drive from working, although an infected Diskette will make it look bad. Make sure you have a clean bootable Diskette and see if it will bring up a DOS Prompt.
If your A-Drive is non-functional, you need open the case and do some work on the hardware. Check cable connections, make sure all cards are seated properly, et cetera.
If you cannot get the A-Drive to work, it might not be possible to do anything, although some Motherboards have BIOS options to boot from a CD, and the later versions of Windows will install directly from the CD without requiring a Floppy Drive. Failing that, you will have to buy and install a new Floppy Drive.
Have you tried bringing Windows up in safe mode? I think F8 at the right time will bring up a boot menu. If you got it running in safe mode, perhaps the File Checker utility would help, or perhaps you could run some virus software to fix the problem.

Hey K,
I come to this forum to learn not to give advice, but (my general ignorance admitted, and maybe after this post, demonstrated) a virus is a software issue, it doesn't have any actual power to change hardware. Sure it can get into boot records and bios settings but it can't unsolder something from your motherboard. And lousy software doesn't ruin a good modem, it just won't work right until the correct software is installed. So, be calm, your basic hardware isn't ruined, I think, in any way. Don't buy any new components yet. Think software and complete cleaning of hard drives and any corrupted installation disks.
Not much help, eh? Sorry, just didn't want you to launch the whole thing out the window, and if you still do look first and make sure to get an audience to witness the spectacle. Ha!

nimnorf: Not bad, keep at it...nothing there I can see that indicates ignorance...your info is correct, a virus is software that cannot physically change hardware.
First thing I can think of is try and get into BIOS and see if the floppy settings have been changed. Some virii can ghange BIOS settings, or overwrite it entirely, in the case of CIH, which is one of the nastiest.
Then if and when you get the floppy to work, try an energency boot disk that can be made with most antivirus programs.
I always hesitate to recommend reinstalling Windows except as a last resort, but when a virus is involved it sometimes turns out to be the only completely successful option, but for now keep it on the back burner, let's see what else we can try first.

What should my BIOS settings be set at. Maybe I just don't know what I am doing. I tried the clean boot up and reinstalling windows. It cannot read A or c drive. What should be the primary and the secondary? Lots of stuff I just don't know.

reset BIOS to "Default settings"
which should be 1) a drive 2) cdrom 3) hard drive
save exit and reboot.

Does the system display anything abour the bios when it boots?
Do you get the Starting Windows 9X line on the screen?
If the problem is in windows, you will have to get a clean (NON-INFECTED) bootable floppy and re-install windows. If you provide some more information, it would be helpful.

When I turn it on it starts up but windows does not. I cannot get it to read my floppy drive it says A abort R retry F fail. It will not recognize my Cd rom either. I have tried safe mode and it tells me there is a problem with my registry and there are several files corrupted.
What are the virii you got?
And enter setup and reset defaults for your BIOS...as had been suggested before....

If you cannot find which key to press unplug the keyboard then boot up the computer. When it does the posts you will gewt an error message telling oyu to go to setup. It will also tell you which key to press.
(now you work out how Bill Gates came up with that) Now switch off the computer and re-insert the keyboard and press the appropriate key

go to http://www.bootdisk.com/ and download the correct one for your OS.
put it on a freshly FORMATTED floopy and write protect it.
that way if your master boot record is corrupt, it will not also corrupt your new boot disk.

Download the boot disk on a know clean computer, also while there down load the F-prot antivirus and run it first...(following the same precaution to write protect the floppy)

Good luck http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
