I have unplugged the cable to my mouse several times in the past when I had a short in the mouse. I did not know that doing this would cause problems. I have replaced the mouse with a brand new one and I am still having major problems. The mouse is very jittery and will not move in a fast manner. Did I damage the ps/2 port and if so how do i repair it? What should I do? thanks

Don’t plug devices into the computer when its power is on. Never plug in a mouse or keyboard into a computer when it is turned on. It could fry your computer’s motherboard (main circuit board).

more information on this subject can be found here (http://www.google.com/search?q=unplugged+mouse+while+computer+was+on)

Sounds like serious trouble. With the mouse acting as you say it does, chances are it damaged the PS/2 system, which means there's a good chance you will have to replace the motherboard to fix it. Try removing and reinstalling the mouse drivers, from Device Manager, it might work, but I doubt it...unplugging it causes damage to the electronics on the motherboard.

A note to others:

Unplugging PS/2 mouse or keyboard should never be done while the computer is powered on, it can and will damage the motherboard. A serial mouse can only be plugged in when Windows starts and you see a message saying Windows didn't find a mouse and it is safe to plug one in. Any other time, you'll damage the mouse, possibly the motherboard. Never clean a mouse while plugged in either, for the same reason.

I think that you have "fried" the mouse port in which case yhour motherboard is damaged.
