Stranger yet. After I viewed it a couple of times using Cut and past.
The Link started working. Pull the image from the disk cache.
Until I cleared the disk cache . The back to the 404

Many of these sites with gifs ask you not to directly link to them, but a lot of people do not pay attention to that request. It may be that they were getting too much traffic through direct links to the gif, so they shut that down.

When an http client makes a request to an http server, a number of additional "headers" can be sent along with the request. One of these headers is called something like HTTP-REFERER, I think. This gives the URL of the page that the request is coming from.

This is just a guess, but these people might have their server configured to deny access to image files unless they have been linked from their own server.

They make money by putting thier advertisments on your Web site. They can only put advertisments on pages, not images. So you can add images to the pages that they serve, but they won't let you serve images from thier server for pages that are served from other servers.
