WINDOWS98(First Edition)

My applications icons are changing for windows98 logos(except the SYSTEM ICONS). Bill still be loved! And when I click on them nothing start. It seems to me that I cannot run them either via the menu START-PROGRAMM.... I have to go to my HDD in order to make them working. You would tell me why I donot make a Shorcut. But this procédure didn't work either.

Where do I have to go to solve my case? I have heard about going to my Registry and click on .REG I know how to go to registry without any problem. But I cannot find that type of extension. Even I made a search. And why is-it so? How can I avoid this in the future
?

Boot using the F8 key, choose Command Prompt Only. Run scanreg by typing
scanreg /fix or if this just happened in the past few days, use the restore option: scanreg /restore. Choose a backup made before the problem showed up.

You might also look for a utility called Tweak, and use the repair option, it will fix your icons. I think WinFiles (http://www.winfiles.com) has it.

Then run a good virus scanner with recently updated DAT files.

It's not Bill's fault. I've used Win 98 since shortly after 98SE came out, and had almost no trouble with it. Only trouble I had was my own doing. Same for Win3.11 and 95. Mr. Gates and MicroSoft catch a lot of undeserved flak, it's usually the installation of third party software or user intervention or viruses that cause most of the problems that get blamed on ol Billy Boy.

Have you installed any new software recently? Games? Drivers? Could be a DOS based game, 16 bit driver, some program that isn't compatible with FAT 32...

If you had everything...Where would you put it?
