What is the benefit of having dual cpus? How do they work?

you famailar with the term multitasking? It doens't just go for OS's, it also means if you had two CPU's-then each can handle a work load independantly of the other, their are even some games which take advantage of this unique feature. Un fortunately W98 doesn't support dual CPU's, so you'll see very little of them in the common household http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/tongue.gif , however since XP is based on the NT kernel-who knows? it might catch on, Then you could scrag your buddies and compose word documents at the same time with no loss of performance in either apps! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

With the speeds of single processors beyond 1 gig now and Win XP [which slices time MUCH better than Win98 etc] I doubt you will see many more dual processor setup's in the future. It was popular when NT first came out because you could get to 900 mhz when everyone else was running at 450 mhz or less.......most software cant handle these speeds anyway!....Unless you want to run two autocad programs side by side, I dont see much use for dualies any more.

Had to do with Bragging Rights there for some time my man. Workstation's and Server's are gonna love 'em forever.

With the upcoming release of even more Dual CPU mother boards.
Many that are being designed for desktop and work station ( No High end SCSI on board)
as the primary use.

It you do a lot of Multitasking that is CPU intensive and want to continue doing other things then a dualie may be in your future.

If you want to Burn a CD and still be able to use your system for normal day to day programs then a dualie is the way to go.
AMD is putting out 2 new MP chips . Designed for the Dual Cpu market.
At 1.2 x2 think of what you can do.
Add the software support from win2k or Linux 2.4 kernal and your up and running.

You don't need to wait for win xp to put one to good use.

I for one Like the Idea that the price for the M/B and chips are coming into the price range of the desktop market.
In the past the servers and High End Graphics work stations were the only ones who took advantage of the systems.
Today you can get a Dual CPU M/B for $150 and add anything from a Duran to a p3_1000
and Make Use of every ounce of power .

Not that I'm an expert on the subject. But it seems to me that there will always be a market for dual processor machines. As mentioned, servers, graphics, workstations are and will be able to use them very well.

My interest, for the most part, is in music production and processing. Unlike most apps (aside from things like gaming) processing music is very REAL TIME intense. Video production... Same thing. As the the tool's abilities along with the user's skills increase the prices of said processors/harware decrease. My hand goes into the air for a vote of confidence that they'll be around for quite a while. At the very least in these nitch markets.

Respectfully... Cory

By No means are the dualies going to fade away.
In fact we should see even more of them. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
