i know you get a lot of these here, that's one of the main reasons i stumbled upon this forum. here's the problem:

had an ASUS P5K mobo with a Core 2 Duo E6850 i think along with 2 1GB sticks of OCZ RAM running at 1066 MHz and an Antec TruePower Trio 650W power supply.

this morning, i decided to flash my BIOS to the latest version because it was supposed to help the system run cooler. i tried to fix somethign that wasn't broken. i went away for a while and when i came back, the flash had completed and the computer had restarted. the monitor was acting like it was not receiving any input from teh vid card (Radeon X850 btw) and the hard drive access light was constantly on, but i couldn't hear the hard drive actually spinning up. i leave it alone for a little while and come back. same thing. restart the computer, the CD-ROM drives spun up, then the HDD light came on and stayed on. figuring i had messed the BIOS up i cleared the CMOS by removing the battery and messing with the jumpers. once again, same thing. believing i had now royally messed up the mobo, i went to CompUSA and got an Asus P5K Deluxe mobo. I get it home and it continues to behave the same way. I unplugged the CD-ROM drives from the power supply and the hard drive light doesn't stay on. It does stay on even if the hard drives are disconnected. All the fans are working and everything, it just won't do anything. I don't think it has a speaker, which is a definite handicap. I'm open to any suggestions at this point :)

thanks for any advice, suggestions, comments, etc.

In situations like this it is best to try a bare-bones boot with minimalsist hardware attached and even with the board removed from the PC and on a non-conductive surface.

Remove everything (except for the PSU, CPU and HeatSink) the absence of any RAM should make any speaker create beeps when you power-up the system.

Put in one stick of RAM and the Video card and see if the sytem will POST. Then try booting to a floppy diskette all on its own. Add back peripherals one by one and you may discover a culprit.

If a new board wont POST then the PSU or the mobo or the CPU are the most likely candidates.

turns out both sticks of RAM died simultaneously. I bought a cheap stick of RAM from Best Buy and the computer works fine...albeit much slower. I opened up a service ticket since the RAM has a lifetime warranty. Thanks for the replies.
