Could you guys enumerate some tips on how to properly configure a router? planning to buy one, problem is, I don't know how to configure it. Thanks

That is way to vague of a question. What type of router? What type of internet connection? A good starting point is just read the instructions of whatever you buy and follow them. Typical home grade routers come setup pretty well for typical internet access out of the box, and provide a hardware NAT firewall which is many times better than running a direct internet connection.

The only configuration that might come into play is if you wanted to run a server behind the router or VPN, or other such things.

It may just work straight away interposed between your current connection and your LAN or you may need to ask your ISP for any custom settings. As Erik intimated, more specifics would be useful.
