My father is trying to get internet access at work. The building administration wont invest any money or help him in any way, but he can do it on his own.

He has Altel cellular phone service, and they offer their internet access card for around $50/month.

Can you use a PCMCIA to PCI adapter and use that card on a desktop somehow? Or do you HAVE to use a laptop?

Anyone know of any other local solution? He works at random government buildings in downtown Cleveland Ohio, but in the lower levels, sometimes below ground.

I'm thinking anywhere he gets phone service, he should be able to get internet?

Do have him read the fine print on the data useage charges.
There are reports of users (not Altel) who have used their cell connection for data linkage and find themselves with thousands of dollars in billing afterwards.

We're talking about the internet access card, not using the phone itself as the connection device.

Anyways I've talked to Altel and they offer a USB interface version of the card... problem solved. No laptop needed.

yeah, Verizon offers that some how too. It can get included with their phone bill, and the device it self can be the phone itself
