View Full Version : Msconfig work for NT 4.0 SP6a??

Hey All,

Referring to my subject line, will it? I recently installed Adaptec Easy CD Creator 4.0 on my NT machine here at work.

Both the Direct CD and Easy CD Creator load on startup. I have checked the usual places to try and find where it's loading from. My startup is empty. Grrrrr!

Does anyone with NT expertise know where I can find these and disable them on startup? Or would msconfig work?

I use the programs often, but prefer to load them when I want them to load, rather than take up system resources on startup.

Thanks a heap.

Cheers,

Thought I should clarify a couple of things.

First, after boot-up completes, I can close the CD Creator by right-clicking on its icon in the taskbar. However, I cannot close the Direct CD by that method. Can't seem to close it by any method.

Neither program, from what I can see, has properties or options that can be tweaked to accomplish what I want.

Cheers,

Try this at your own risk.

Go into Regedit and find this key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run. Highlight the key, open the "registry" menu and choose "export registry file". When done you can delete the lines for direct cd and reboot.

This should get rid of the wizard from loading at startup ,but keep the packet writing functionality. If anything should go wrong simply import your saved key either by opening Regedit and choosing "import..." from the "registry" menu or simply clicking the saved file.

I was recently looking for info on DirectCd problems for another post and I came across and interesting little tidbit on Roxio's (http://www.roxio.com/en/support/dcdwin/livingdcd.html) site saying that disabling DirectCd from running at startup could cause things like locking th CD drive, and other such nonsense...they basically said that the latest versions must run from startup, but all of that was in regards to Win9x, not sure about 2k....

hey

I saw that other post about Adaptec CD Direct too!

http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

I have it and run it on win98 (only when I need it) and my dreaded compaq has had no such problems.

I would add that I do have no problem believing this, but I think the situation was when using CD Direct only (a CD-RW burned CD Direct 'drive') can definitely have problems I just have not used that part of Adaptec very much.

I generally was just using Easy CD Creator and experienced no problems with BOTH CDD and the other one being disabled thru msconfig and running them when needed.

in other words, CDD is needed, when you put in a CDRW burned by that program, or you can have door/eject problems. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif

Not to confuse the issue more than it is, but, when I first installed Adaptec Easy CD Creator 4, Direct CD caused so many problems I was told by others in a forum to uninstall Direct CD and that would fix it. I did, and it's worked great since. Now when I reformat, I don't even dl the Direct CD anymore, just Adaptec.

Kudos to Ghost_Hacker for the reg tweak. I did it with no ill effects on my system. I even helped a fellow co-worker disable some things that he had loading that he didn't want. And, damned if I didn't learn a little something along the way.

Coolness has been achieved
