Hi.
:)

- MSI m/board MS-6730 ver 1(socket 478)
- 512MB RAM
- P4 Socket 478 @ 2.4GHz

No beep, no video.

I have tried swapping-out the following: (one at a time)

- Known to be good AGP card
- Known to be good RAM
- Known to be good PSU

All three of these tests resulted in no beep, no video.

I am thinking that the motherboard is dead.

I am of the understanding, that all P4 CPU's have a built-in temperature control system, making them essentially impossible to kill by way of overheating - the clock speed reduces as the temp of the core rises above about 60'C or so, so the PC runs slower, as the CPU gets hotter, but this protection prevents a P4 from cooking itself to death.

Is this correct?

I don't know for sure, as I deal mainly with AMD CPU's, you see...

If this is the case, then it is highly unlikely that the CPU has died, and symptoms therefore point to the motherboard being dead.

I have tried the RAM in the suspect board, in another PC, and it works fine, so convinced that it is not bad RAM.

Anyone agree with me?

Are your fans coming on? If your system fans are coming on and hard drives coming on and dvd drives coming on then it is MOST likely the CPU; otherwise its the motherboard.

Yes, fans come on, and so do drives, but I have the drives unplugged for the moment. I don't think I have any form of Socket-478 CPU spare, but I will have a hunt, and if I can find one, I will swap the CPU's and see what happens. I still think it is the motherboard, personally...
