Hello, I was recently infected witha Sub7 trojan horse virus and after surfing the net fora while managed to find a good scanner to purge it from my system. Anyway I just wanted to know how peoplego about writing these types of virus and how they work. At the time I had a dial up modem whick (I think!!) changes my IP allocation every time I log-on, so how would the would-be-hacker be able to find my IP address to connect to the server-end of the virus, exactly what would they be able to do to my PC and what could I do, if im right the server and client end of the virus are remotely connected, to their computer, wouldnt it give me the same access to his?
SO MANY QUESTIONS.......

A trojan horse could be designed to "phone home" and let the hacker know you are online and what your IP address is. I don't think a hacker would create a "backdoor" that would allow you to access his system http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
I recommend running a firewall, like ZoneAlarm. It will let you know if a trojan in your system is trying to access the Internet.
I have a dialup connection and log at least one hit every five minutes on average. Most are harmless, but some logged hits do show to be attacks.
A search of Google (http://www.google.com) using Sub7 trojan horse virus will give you a lot of info about Sub7 and how a hacker can control your system with it.

NTG,
There is a fascinating description of a DOS attack using the Sub7 Trojan by Steve Gibson of Gibson Research at http://grc.com/dos/grcdos.htm. Check it out, it reads better than many spy novels on the market. Additionally, it gives an insight into the people who initiate these viruses. Steve also has some useful diagnostic tools to analyze your system's security. One note, Steve is given to hyperbole.
I agree with Reid, Zone Alarm is a great tool at a great price (free).
Good luck,
ER

To answer your question about how a virus is written, NewbieTecheGuy-it is nothing more than a program itself which creates unwanted affects in your ( or someone elses ) system-i don't know of any virii that were written to specifically target a certain individual ( though it can be done ) most are written to destroy or create havok on generally any PC. You can see how this is done yourself by using a simple program like visual basic; you can write a small code that will cause annoying pop-ups on someones desktop or do something like disable their mouse. I have written programs like these as gags to play on friends, but most virius programs you hear about were created by twisted individuals who are nothing better than vandals. Instead of using their programming skills for a positive app; they get their kicks out of destroying other peoples properties. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif
