When running Scandisk, you have the option of running a thorough scan or a normal scan. A thorough scan scans the "surface" of the disk. What is the surface?

You are dealing with jargon which means that the Scandisk Utility will look at every place on the hard drive where information can be stored.

A hard disk really looks like one or more round flat metal plates with (I think) an iron oxide coating (At any rate, a thin layer of some magnetic material). Information is stored by magnetizing spots in the thin coating. That thin coating is called the surface.
