Good question! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif

Basiclly it's the " brain " of windows operating system. There is where all the major " keys " or lines of program are stored that windows programs ( and third party ones ) " call " upon to properly excecute their intergration with windows and their own operations. It is the single most important piece of software code in windows.

There used to be only .ini files to tell windows how to operate. For a good explanantion of .ini files and how the registry works go here{ itp-journals (http://www.itp-journals.com/search/e1209.htm) } and download the .pdf file-it's an excellant tutorial on the registry and .ini files.
