Hi, guys, first time poster....

Have done a few searches on how to conect my 8 conectors to the 8 pin header on my motherboard. (opened the case to sort another problem to find the wires were not conected to the header, so I thought Id sort it before proceeding to the origonal prob)

I am a bit confused as all the advice I have seen describes the headers as
****
****
but mine is
space ***space
. *****

Any ideas on how to procede connecting the wires to the header, ie what colours go to which pin?

I got a 2-d (yellow)
1-d (yellow)
1+5v (red)
2+5v (red)
2 ground (black)
1 ground (black)
2+d (green)
1+d (blue)

Any help would be apreciated as its my daughters computer and she is giving me jip about it!!!
Thanks
Andrew

Welcome to the http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif forums.

You need to look in the motherboards manual and find the USB pinout diagram. The pinouts vary from board to board so you have to have the pinouts for that board.

And don't think about doing it trial and error as you can fry the system if you hook it up wrong.

If you have trouble finding the pinout diagram post back you motherboards make and model, or brand and model if a bought machine, and we will se if we can look it up for you.

Thanks,

Any idea how I find out what sort of motherboard I have?

The PC is a self build, I think, although it is in an Acer case, and its about 4 years old. it is second hand.

Motherboard Identification (http://www.motherboards.org/moboidtools.html) may help. The BIOS string is commonly displayed at the bottom of the screen at startup. If it is obscured by a splash screen then hit ESC early on in the process and hit Pause to freeze it long enough to read it. If the monitor is slow to warm up do a CTRL+ALT+DEL to reboot during the intitial text mode of startup.

Your header layout looks a bit unusual so would like to see the manual for myself. I have put some help (http://paulski.com/zpages.php?id=1713) together but use it at your own risk.

Thanks again,

Cant power up the PC just now as its in bits. It has a big black amd athlon pluged into the middle if that is any help???

Your help page looks similar to the information I have found elsewhere, so I am pretty confident about pluging it in when the time comes, if only I could work out what was pin one and pin 8 I should be ok.

The CPU doesnt really help. The make/model of the PC or any identfication marks on the motherboard itself might be helpful in ID-ing.
