I am feeling perplexed about the high fluctuating rate of my PC system resources. At one moment,it can reach as high as 84% but later it can drop drastically to 34% without performing any heavy task. What are the adverse effects of low level of system resources and what can be done to maintain my PC sys.resources at 88%.thank you.
System recources go up and down w/ what you have running. Windows isn't very good about releasing them once you close a program. You can go to Start>Run and type msconfig and go to the startup tab and see what you have running and cut some out. The only program you have to have running is Explorer. Also an antivirus and firewall if you use them. 34% system recources is fine. I wouldn't worry until you get to 15-20%.

what do you have running on system start up???
go to start>run>type msconfig>click ok look in sys.start up NOTE you can un check any thing EXCEPT::sys.REG:sys.tray: you should let anti virus run but not nessessary.
they have a list of what your sys. may or may not have to run. hope this helps

Hi Eric,
This very topic was discussed in some detail recently. Check out this Thread (http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/Forum8/HTML/000354.html) and the links that are posted in it

Yoda,
That's a myth if you ask me. I haven't let systray run at all on any of my Windows boxes for 3 years now.

Quite right YODA74 you do have to have at least systray running ( or you'll get no clock and most programs won't function ) But everything after that is mostly debatable; like power profiles, anti-virus, etc..One of the things i hate most is the task scheduler-it automatically assumes you want to have it running anytime you do a reinstall/fresh install of windows, i quickly move to scrap that annoying program in a hurry! I'll choose when and what maintanence program(s) i'll run, thank you very much Bill. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

YUP that straightens it out now I don't know.hehehehe. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
I have never had systray running after my first 6 mos. having my first pc and my clock and programs ran fine. So I guess it's all a matter of opinion, because you don't have to have it running. I used to think I had to have it running also, until I met more people than not having theirs turned off so I tried it. No problems for me, and the less I have running the better.

Hi
I thought I read somewhere that all you lose by unchecking System Tray in msconfig is the speaker icon.
My system runs fine without it W98SE

I just tried shutting off system tray on a Dell Inspiron 4000 laptop running Windows ME. Because it's a laptop, I've got more stuff in my system tray than usual. These were still there after a reboot:
NAV, ZoneAlarm, the touchpad icon, and the bay swap icon
and these disappeared (whatever that means):
the volume control, the PCMCIA swap icon, and the battery level icon.
I'd be curious to know how other folks' experiments go.

Kaos i stand corrected; i went over to one of my old systems that i just recently did as fresh install of windows on-shutdown the system tray and everything still works fine.( including the volume control )
I always assumed you had to have it in order to run the TSR programs; guess it shows that as much about windows as you may know; there is always something else to find! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/tongue.gif
