I put two ethernet cards in my pc so I could connect to the internet on my XBOX 360 and my pc at the same time. I was told I could plug the xbox into the second ethernet card and it would work. But I know that I have to set up something else for it to work. What else needs to be done?

For Windows XP try this link (http://www.xbox.com/en-US/LIVE/Connect/ics_xp.htm).
Hope this helps :)

Well, I tried following the instructions on the webpage, and this is what I get. Both connections on my pc are set to automatically obtain an IP address

Setup your router to assign ip addresses other then 192.168.X.X for instance you might set it up to use address in the 10.0.0.0 range.
The ethernet card connected to your XboX wants to use 192.168.X.X (in fact ICS is designed only to use this address range for the "internal" card) but it can not do that if the other ethernet card already is using this address range.
You can check what IP the cards are using by typing ipconfig /all at the command prompt.
If this does not work click "start" then "run" and type nsw.log, click "ok" and post the log here.
Good luck :)
