Iam trying to set up my router to open ports with an ip address but im confused which is mine.
When i look it up on the net on different sites my country (spain) ip address is 83.60.xxx.xxx but when i go into CMD----ipconfig it brings up another 2 ip addresses
1)ethernet adapter wireless network connection
192.168.xx.xx
2) ethernet adapter local area connection
192.168.xx.xx
So with my router which ip address am i meant to use and what do the others mean? why does one start with 83 and the other two start with 192
Im a bit confused now??
You want to use the first one. My wireless network uses the wirles IP. The 192.168.xx.xx IPs are just specific to your computer, where as the 83.60.xxx.xxx (three numbers, in the last two blocks, that's strange) is the number your port is painted with.

The 83 one is the external IP assigned by your ISP. The others are private IP's inside your LAN specific to that computer and that LAN connection, wireless and wired, assigned by your router.
If you are port forwarding inside your LAN you will want to use the 192 address that is for the connection you are using, either the wireless or the wired.

Just agreeing with the others. You need the public IP address to access the router from the internet (usually the internet) and the router then forwards the packets with the specific port number to the computer on the LAN; the one with the specified IP address in the router's settings.
Just to relate one problem I had with a wireless ISP. The aerial on the roof was set-up as a bridge and so the public IP address didn't access my own router until the ISP changed the aerial's function from a bridge into that of a router. This shouldnt concern you if you have ADSL or cable.

right i understand so as Jlreich says if i need to open the ports for azeureus or utorrent i will need to use the 192 ip in the nat settings inside my router config?
Its just that ive tried to open the port 55100 in utorrent and on my router using the 192 ip address but im still getting a NAT error when i test the port.
Utorrent suggests ports between 16000 and 68000 and ive gone into my NAT settings within my router and opened up the TCP port on 55100 with 192 ip. That didnt work so i opened the same port this time using TCP and UDP and its still NAT error
is this correct what im doing?

I would check that your application is using that port. Start it up and then at the command line type netstat -a it should list the port your application is using under the local address header. Or you can download and use tcp view (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897437.aspx) which can show you what process/program has the port open.
Also what router are you using?
Good luck :)

Are you sure you need port forwarding for torrents. Not an area that I'm all that familiar with but they have always worked on PCs on my LAN as long as no firewall was blocking the relevant ports.

Ok my router is a comtrend 536+ wireless modem router.
After i wrote the last message i went into my router config and open my 192ip port with port number 51000. I went back onto test it and it says the port was now OK!!! Great!!!
However this morning i have just switched on my pc and its saying NAT error again on port 83.60.x.xxx so maybe it has something to do with the ISP IP address, what do you think? The 83IP address changes everytime I turn on the pc so do you think I should need to try and get a static ip address??
The 192 ip address is always static and never changes. I cannot understand why it open the port OK for me yesterday as i never opened any ports with the 83.xx.x.xxx address.
I have done a check also and port 51000 isnt used with anything else

Your PC should not be reporting errors on any IP that is not assigned to it.
You must be seeing an error generated by an outside host and displayed in your program in this case I would bet that your program is no longer using port 51000. (it might pick different ports each time you start it up. This is comman for many "internet programs".)
In that case you will need to check that you can configure the application to use only port 51000 and then verify that your router's port forwarding rules are still in place. It is also possible that your ISP is blocking that port in that case you may need to follow these steps (http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Comtrend/CT-536/Azureus.htm) .
Hope this helps.
