I am just having a great time with this #%** computer!
I have been deleting stuff I shouldn't have
and maybe not deleting stuff I should!
Why is the genigraphics driver listed as one of my
printers? When I try to see the properties I get
error message: rundll 32 saying the program has
performed an illegal operation~
I am using windows 98 2nd. hp deskjet 930c printer.
This all began while trying to get msworks to work!
....(should have deleted msworks)!
Also, I thought I had 3 com ports and an lpt port...
now I have 2 com ports and the lpt.
Went to the microsoft site and did all recommended tasks
with no results. I am out of ideas...(Thank God!)
can anyone help?

#1) do not delete things-(icons are ok to delete- in fact if you don't delete the icon prior to uninstalling some programs, it can be hard to get rid of)), you uninstall them.
how long ago did all of this start ??
if within (5) days you can go to a previous registry.
let us know.

Hey Sea,
Thanks for answering my post...
I have been having problems for some time now (maybe a couple of weeks).
I actually did a system restore aprox. 10 days ago but things are still just not right! I thought I had a virus to begin with but now I don't
know since it was still not right after the system restore.
Things just aren't where I think they should be, however, I am not that computer savy...I have looked for the unusual but without the knowledge I need, I wouldn't really know what to do if I found something except to delete it. I have most things working now but the driver in the printer folder just doesn't seem right and msworks is messed up. As for a scanreg /restore, I don't think I have had a day that the registry has been correct. Not enough off to prevent me from using this computer just bugs me that it isn't right so I keep messing with it! I have made a mess of things and it may be best to just begin...again!
Next time I'll ask BEFORE I delete... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

Sounds like to me you might need to learn how to reinstall windows

If you deleted programs without unistalling them you may have all kind of registry problems. If you need to reinstall windows have all these things ready, your windows cd key, back up all your data, have all your drivers backed up, a windows start up floppy

Very uncommon for me to reccomend a reinstall, but with all the deleting, dll problems and so forth, that may be the only way to go. What brand of computer is it? That might help...and a full fdisk/format/reinstall or restore would eliminate the possibility of a virus in most cases. It is possible one is lurking around still even after a system restore. MAke sure you use a Start Up disk that was made on a KNOWN CLEAN computer, and definitely write protect it.

Hey Gallaeglagh & iisbob,
Thank you for the input.
Yes...headache is one name for it. Yes...I deserve only a door stop...
but I will not give up until this hp computer is working right!
We have an older Gateway that came with windows 3.1 and a Gateway with windows 98 1st. addition and I have never encountered anything like this. Could there be a hidden virus still in this system?
Thanks to all kind enough to reply,

Hi Paleo Pete,
This is a HP pavilion pentium running windows 98 2nd edition. It came with a system recovery disk, an application recovery disk and 3 microsoft program disks: works, money and encarta. I have a startup disk. Should I try the application recovery first just to see if things start happening again? I did the system recovery about 2 weeks ago, sure there was a virus in this system. I have received some emails that are strange and my isp has a warning posted on the web site that many subscribers have reported the sircam virus. I have the option checked not to open mail and I delete unknown mail before opening but they do show up at the bottom of outlook express when they come in.
Your help is most appreciated!

If you have a computer to play with -- testing, etc., use it for that. My "real" computer is upstairs, and my "test" computer is in the basement. By having it, I can delete, uninstall, take apart, re-do, reinstall, test over and over until I am sure I won't have a problem with the "good" computer.
Well since you have an HP, I would suggest going into setup, changing the boot order to CDROM first, C: second, rebooting, pop in the the System Restore CD, and run a full restore (which will also reformat your drive)...the system restore cd is self-booting so that is why you need the CDROM set to be the first boot device...
