Hi Alex.

Love to help, but need more info. What are the specs of the PC you're using? Are you trying to install the drive singly or in tandem? And in what way doesn't it work - won't load an OS, or not detected at all?

All that aside, my first thought is to check the jumper settings.

Regards

Ruana

Has it been partitioned and formatted?

First off, it has been partioned and formatted, i am trying to just format it on my HP until my case comes for the other parts so, ive had the side off the 1ghz, 384mb, 20gb hp pavillion with ME, and trying to put Windows 95 on the new HD, the 40 gig seagate, some one told me 95 only goes to 32gig, so i changed the jumpers at the back so that the max was 32 gig, also, when i partioned it, it only took up 5 % or sumthin, weird, can u help me now?

Sorry Alex, but I'm still not getting what exactly the problem is. Is only 5% of the drive showing up after partitioning? Does it freeze 5% into formatting? 5% into loading W95? None of the above? What?

When i go into FDISK tool and partion the hard drive, it says USAGE in the top right, yea? Well mine only says 5 % shouldnt this say 100 % as it is the Drive usage? I think the problem is that Win95 only supports Hard Disk's upto 2.1 Gigabytes big, no matter, my mums friend is lending us Win98, shame its not SE, i have a lot of problems with WinME that i have at the moment any thoughts on that?

Hello Alex,
For starters, Win95 does not have a 2.1 Gig limitation. What I can decifer from your posts would have no bearing on what OS you are useing. You are not even to the OS install yet.
You post is still a little hard to follow. First you said the HD was "partitioned and formatted", then you immediately said you were formatting on an HP. This may be a big part of your problem as the HP needs to partition and format with the factory install disk (proprietery junk.) If this HD will be in a machine that you build yourself, DO NOT use the HP factory disk!
As for the 5% usage, are you sure you are answering "YES" to the "Enable large disk support" dialog in Fdisk? Once you do that, you will be able to enter the size of the partitions you want.
I have not seen the new Seagates yet, but I find it odd they would have a "Jumper" to set the usable size.
You might try rereading your posts and maybe rewording it so it makes a little more sense. Not trying to be hurtful here, it is just hard to understand what you are saying.
Try HERE (http://www.bootdisk.com) and download the Windows 98 bootdisk with CDROM support.
You should be able to get this drive partitioned and formatted with that but, you do not want to install the OS until it is in the other case (registry...)
Hope this helps

I would have to say Fat32 is what you want. What version of 95 are you using? Oh yea, you are going with 98.
It sounds like you have gotten far enough along to start from scratch. Fdisk, delete all existing partitions, create desired partitions, set the first one as active, format, and install your OS.
You might concider a couple of partitions on this 40 Gig.

40 Gig is very large. If you had 1 partition and you had a system crash, you could loose everything on that 1 partition. If you had 2, you could put your OS and other apps on 1 and save all your documents on 2. If you crash your OS or other apps, you reformat that partition and reinstall, leaving your docs untouched.

I do...you can create a small one and direct all your games to save to it...that way when it does go belly up and you need to reinstall you r games you're back in business without having to start each game from scratch...
