modem not being detected

A friend of mine has a computer that has windows xp professional installed on it. The computer was given to him the original problem showed a modem that had a yellow circle with a black mark inside the yellow circle next to the modem. I went to a forum I don't remember which one but someone replied that I was to uninstall the modem. With out taking the modem out, and reboot the computer I did that and now the computer does not detect any modem it makes me choose from a list how do I know the right one. The computer was built so it has no brand name on it what do I need to do to help my friend? I am using a public computer to post my question so I can not download anything and my friend does not want to take the modem out of the computer unless it is absolutely necessary we can not afford to buy a new modem. confused:

You need to know the manufacturer if the modem. If you can't remove it to see, than download the unknown devce identifier (http://www.zhangduo.com/unknowndeviceidentifier.html) Run the program, and then you should be able to identify the modem.

it makes me choose from a list how do I know the right oneIf that is during the install new hardware wizard then usually just pick the default one highlighted - or look for XP in the list of options.

Which OS? by the way.

the operating system is windows xp professional it came installed on the computer so what the person that last replyed i just hit the enter key when the modem list comes up or what i am not understanding :confused:
