Hi Upendra, I agree with Yoda, in that I don't think it is possible.

The data on a DVD is packed closer than a CD and depending what type of DVD you have it can also be double layered and double sided.

The laser required to read the data from a DVD works at a lower wavelength than that of a CD-ROM drive and it also has the ability to re-focus on second layer of data underneath the first layer.

geebee76 has it right, it's not a matter of software-this is a hardware issue, most standard CD rom drives use a differnet wavelength laser than DVD drives do and the dye used in DVD media is also different than standard CDR media. However, CDRW discs are very close to the same dye makeup as DVD's, so it's possible that a CDR/RW drive might read a DVD, heavy stress on the might. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif

There is a reg hack that will enable you to use Windows Media player as a DVD player if you have a DVD drive, but usually DVD drives come with a 3rd party player ( ie; WinDVD 2000 ) that is much superior to playing DVD's than WMP.

This an interesting test, i'm going to have to try this myself-i'll post back on my success or lack thereof.

Another issue is that the ROTATIONAL SPEEDS are different for the DVD and CD-ROM. According to my Toshiba SD-R1002 combo drive the DVD spins at 2800rpm, and the CD at 5100rpm,CD-RW spins at separate speeds depending on reading or writing.

Question would be, beyond the issue of laser wavelength, whether the rotational speed is hardware or software directed.

May all your dealings in life be win/win!
