View Full Version : Trojan Horse Dropper.Generic.RGQ

Trojan Horse Dropper.Generic.RGQ was detected by AVG scan. this morning and I"m at a loss what to do now.

Just a day ago, this annoying Trojan Horse, is preventing Photoshop CS3 from opening. I get a pop-up window "Grace Expired" and I need to activate PS, which doesn't work.

So, what do I do? Purchase one of the pay software programs? Download a free one, if so, which?

Much Thanks!

Please download SmitfraudFix (http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip) (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Problem Continues....

When I go to launch PS CS3 I get a pop-up window (Adobe PS CS3: Grace Expired). It goes on to tell me, in the pop-up window, that I must activate now to continue to use PS CS3, and it list my serial #s. However, it doesn't work.

Please do this:

It would be a good idea to print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
Just before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Reboot and post that log and a fresh HJT log in a Reply...

Looks good and appears faster.

What's next & what safeguards need to be in place? Also, what do I look for regarding future issues/problems?

Big Thanks!

Okay, what's next here with this last printout?

Being a novice, I worry about NOT knowing when/how my laptop may get infected. Beyond the obvious, what do I look for? Is there a good article/reference?

What program(s) do I need in place to avoid any future problems? I have the free version of AVG & AVG Ant-Spy ware. Also, I need to learn what to do when these programs are run & produce a readout.

~ Thanks ~

This:

O20 - Winlogon Notify: hblogon - hblogon.dll (file missing)

is still in there and it is troubling me that it does not go away.

Remove it with Hijackthis and instead of re-starting, o back in and scan again and see if it re-spawms before it re-boots. If it's gone, boot into safe mode and remove it in safe mode. Re-boot and post another log....

Is it gone from your log.

Boot into safe mode and see if it's there?

Boot back into regular mode and give me a fresh log.

You have been deleting this for the last few posts and still shows in your log....

I think we got it all, let's do one more scan and see what happens.....

* Using Internet Explorer, Click here (http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols3.shtml) to use the F-Secure Online Scanner
It's explained there with images how to allow the ActiveX to start the scan, so read that first.
Then click the F-Secure Online Scanner Next Generation Beta link.
Once the ActiveX is installed, you should accept the License terms by clicking OK below to start the scan.
Click the Full System Scan button.
It will start to download scanner components and databases. This can take a while.
The main scan will start.
Once the scan finished scanning, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button
It could be possible that your firewall gives an alert - allow it, because that's a connection you establish to submit infected files to F-Secure.
The cleaning can take a while, so please be patient.
Then click the Show report button and copy and paste what's present under results in your next reply.

IE v6.0 was restored & I'm running into a problem getting started w/the Scanner. I get the "Insufficient rights to use ActiveX controls" & I have to adjust user rights.

I right click on the IE icon and get two choices:

Run as current user xxxx/rick, or

I see no admin. rights.

I'm running Firefox. So "restore" may not have been the best word. I located and started up IE.

With the above question, I've not been doing updates, at least, I've not used IE to get Window updates. I'm here as I need assistance and learn how better to manage my computer.

I can't get past the License Agreement...

“Insufficient rights to use ActiveX controls! Please check your user rights & Internet Explore security settings.”

This pop-up window appears with the License Agreement. The “Approve” selection is dimmed & the above message appears.

From the Q&A section…

A: You don't have enough user rights to install the required ActiveX control. You need to run Internet Explorer once with administrative rights first. To do this:

1. Right click on the Internet Explorer icon.

2. Chose "Run as..." and select an account with administrator rights.

3. After having run F﷓Secure Online Scanner once, you can run F﷓Secure Online Scanner normally until the ActiveX control needs updating.

Can’t find a selection for an account w/admin rights. See earlier message about what appears.

I did this as well inside IE.

Your security settings in Internet Explorer prevent ActiveX controls from being downloaded and installed to your computer. You need to lower your security settings a little in order to run F‑Secure Online Scanner.

In Internet Explorer, select "Internet Options" from the "Tools" menu and click on the "Security" tab. Then click the "Custom level" button to display the security settings. In ActiveX controls and plug-ins, change the setting of option "Download signed ActiveX control" from "Disable" to "Prompt" and then click OK.

There is no need to change anything else. This change will now cause Internet Explorer to prompt you before installing an ActiveX control instead of just rejecting it. Before you accept an ActiveX control, always check the signature of the ActiveX control and that the signature has been verified by a trusted CA.

Warning: Don't select the "Enable" alternative for downloading ActiveX controls, since it might lead to that harmful content is installed on your computer without your knowledge.

Every PC has and administrator account. Called Administrator. You need the password. When given the option, use the account Administrator and the password.

I can’t figure out/find how to log under an Administrator account, which I noted on Wednesday. The Q&A section from the F-Secure site states this…

A: You don't have enough user rights to install the required ActiveX control. You need to run Internet Explorer once with administrative rights first. To do this:

1. Right click on the Internet Explorer icon.

2. Chose "Run as..." and select an account with administrator rights.

3. After having run F-Secure Online Scanner once, you can run F-Secure Online Scanner normally until the ActiveX control needs updating.

I found this information from two different website trying to solve the problem on my own. Any truth to these?

= = =
If you're using XP Home Edition and want to maintain an Administrator account, you might have a big problem. In that OS, the Administrator account is available only when the computer runs in Safe Mode; you can't create an Administrator account that's available in any typical mode of system operation. This limited availability hinders the Administrator account's effectiveness in managing the computer.
= = =

From Elder Geek site….

- Add Administrator Account to Log In Screen -

When Windows XP is first installed it requires you to enter at least one name of a user who will access the computer. Once you create this name the default Administrator account vanishes. To access it, press Ctrl-Alt-Delete twice at the Welcome screen to retrieve the standard Windows 2000 logon dialog. Log on as Administrator from this point. To log the Administrator off, click [Start] [Log Off] and [Log Off] when the [Log Off Windows] selection box appears. The Log On screen with the available users will be displayed.

- To Make the Administrator Account Always Visible on the Login Screen-

[Start] [Run] [Regedit]

Registry Key:

HKEY_LOCALMACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\SpecialAccounts\UserLis t

Modify/Create the Value Data Type(s) and Value Name(s) as detailed below.

Data Type: DWORD// Value Name: Administrator

Setting for Value Data: [0 = Disabled / 1 = Enabled]

Exit Registry and Reboot
= = =

Sorry this process has taken up so much of your time!! I’d speed it up if I knew how.

Now that you are clean, here is my prevention speech:

How to Protect Yourself While On-Line

Make sure you have an up to date Antivirus. Scan Regularly. There are many free versions:

AVAST (http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html)
AVG (http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/)
Antivir (http://www.free-av.com/antivirus/allinonen.html)

Make sure you have a software firewall and if you are on broadband, get behind a NAT router. There are also free versions:

Kerio (http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Home-Home-Office/Sunbelt-Personal-Firewall/)
Sygate (http://www.filehippo.com/download_sygate_personal_firewall/)

Much thanks for ALL of your help!!

Two closing questions...

For issues regarding the individual security items you've recommended, is it best to address those in the dedicated website forums, if they exist; or here?

Regarding F-Secure online scan - I use Firefox, but should I bring out IE and run this scan on a regular basis?

Again...

~ Thanks ~

You can post questions about individual programs here.

You only need F-secure if you think there is a problem. Running it does no harm.
