View Full Version : What is the refreash rate all about?

I have been to so many sites in the last few months trying to find out what is causing low frame rates ( most times ) and short burts of stutting (with no HD activity) .
Now, around 20 or so people have all said its my 15" 60Hrz monitor that cant refreash fast enough and is causing a bottle neck.
First up, when I got the card it did not work with my monitor at all, my rig would just crash, so I snapped off pin 15 and it worked fine, but now @ only 60 Hrz.
I dont understand what this means. What does the refreash rate have to do with the speed at which games play.
Thats for your time.

Go into your screen display and change the refresh rate see if that helps you. see what it is set to know change to a higher rate say 65% to 75% or higher. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif By the way they put those pins on there for a reason you snapem off changes the way they work.

Hello Tbird,
It looked as though we were making progress on this one in another post of yours. Wonder why you started another.
Anyway, Refresh rate is how often the monitor writes an image in 1 second. 60 Hrz. would write to the screen 60 times a second. If your game and vcard are produceing more images than the monitor can write then you will get stuttering, delays, and freezes. I am not a gamer so I dont know if 60 Hrz is enough for what you are doing. I am sure there is someone here who would know, so hang on a bit for that.
As for snapping off pin 15, where did you get the idea for that? I'm sure that has a few of us very curious.
You might go back and read thru your other post on this and pay attention to the responses you got. Especialy about background programs, and the apparent problems with Asus mobos and Gforce cards.
Have you ever tried a different monitor on this machine to verify it is your monitor?
Good luck

If I tell you to think for yourself, then you're not doing it.

This is not directed at those asking questions in order to gain knowledge. That shows you are thinking.

bassman, yeah, my other topic is more or less the same, but this is more on the how does it work kind of thing , http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif and you did explain it here, sweet, now I see.
Um yeah for the other bits of the topic in the other thread. I have no back ground progs running and I have 90% resources free.
But now the way you explained that if my card is doing more than the monitor can handle ( refreash at ) then thats the answer I was looking for, thank you, I'll be getting a new monitor ASAP. Um, my card and Mobo seem to be running great together as I never gets crashes and my 3d mark 2001 scores are very high for a 32 meg card and like I said, if I turn off Vsinc in UT my FPS go as high as 165.
As for snapping off pin 15, I read it at geforcefaq.com and it stated:
Problem, QUOTE: My computer crashes with my new card under win 2000.
Answer, Some old style monitors, ( like I have ) will not function with geforce cards. Snap off pin 15. I thought, well, I have nothing to loose.
Now, I did have a 3D prophet geforce 2 MX 32 meg SDRAM and it crashed with this monitor on a Compaq Preserio, no 3D apt would work. So I got a Kyro 1 card and new RIG and it ran fine and very fast indeed. I thought, hmm, the MX was faulty. So I then got the GF 2 GTS 32 meg DDR, my Rig crashed, arrr, so I snapped off pin 15 and it ran fine, bar the jittering crap I get and some what low FPS.
So, After all that, the way you explained it bassman makes perfect sence, It indeed seems my monitor is the bottle neck, so to speak. Thanks for that http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
YODA74, I cant change it, its locked at Optiaml 60Hrz or adaptor defult 60Hrz, thats after I snapped off pin 15, before I did I could go only as high as 85 Hrz but my rig just crashed .
Anyway, thank you all for your input, I now know what the go is, after 6 Mths of head aches, 2 days in this kick ass forum the problem is solved.
Sweet.
