Modem Speed Question

Just curious but have a question regarding dial up modems. While I still use it at this point and reasonable happy with it, do some of these programs that claim to automatically improve speed for modem use in upload and download modes really work?

Usually not, you are limited to 56K on a switched phone line (POTS).

They don't actually speed up the modem, but they do speed up the transfer of data. All they really do is compress data before it is sent and uncompress data as it arrives. I used it back when I had dialup and it did make data transfer noticeably faster (barely), but the extra processing overhead slowed my computer down a bit.
