mjc, or others,
Where do I find info on the RAMDISK you mentioned? What are they primarily used for and what do they cost?

RAMDRIVE is a method of using part of some of your system RAM as if it were a drive...this works in Win before ME (lack of realmode DOS prevents its use see this (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q278/6/20.asp) MS article, I usexmsdsk (http://www.simtel.net/pub/msdos/ramdisk/fu_rd19i.zip) (that is a download link I can't find the linkthat describes it) as opposed to MS ramdrv.sys that is included in Win (limited to a 32MB size disk xmsdsk is limited by how much RAM you want to use)

Okay, let's assume that I understood what you said. Do have a hazy concept of setting RAM aside. Is there any advantage to doing it other than deleting Temp files? And if I did do that..set aside some RAM for that..that tranlates to less RAM available to me when working on graphics? And last, but not least, would I have to go into DOS? For me, DOS is a dark, spooky place where the mouse doesn't work. Windows was created for dummies like me. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Kay...I'm with you!
DOS to me is also like a dark cave. I relate it to the miners who would bring the parakeet to test if it was safe to go in. A place where you can't even find a rodent! Even mice who are used to dark spooky places don't dare to tread, I'm outta there! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif

The most DOS you'll need to deal with is the autoexec.bat file...and that can be edited from within Windows. The rest can be done in Windows also...ramdrive.sys (the MS program) resides in the Windows folder, the link I posted in the other related thread tells exactly how to set one up...yes it works in DOS but you don't have to!
Yes, Kay, it will give less RAM when working on graphics, but if you keep the RAMDRIVE small (like 2MB) you can just put browser cache there...

Thanks MJC,
I now have DOS IS YOUR FRIEND posted on my refrigerator...still wonder why I did it, cause you can't even read it! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif I'll change it to DOS IS MY FRIEND TOO! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/tongue.gif
However, I'm running Me so I guess for now I won't have to venture into the darkened cave, where even the mice fear to tread!
Thanks for the explanation...clear and concise.

Does ME not sit on top of DOS? and therefor still accessable with a DOS boot disk?

Ernie
Yes, but ME has nifty little feature...it doesn't use autoexec or config, so it erases them and builds a "blank" of each, each boot up...so any changes you make to them are not going to work...

I thought that the data written to a ram drive might end up in the OS swap file.
Might this happen?

If one hundred million people believe a foolish idea, it is still a foolish idea.
Doubtful, because the RAM for the RAMDRIVE is allocated outside of the OS...Windows just sees it as another drive, therefore it shouldn't end up in the swapfile. But all this is only for systems that really have some RAM to spare...if you are running less than 64MB then it doesn't really help anything because you will be putting something else in the swapfile, and with systems over 128MB you can make a fairly large drive...and if you really have memory to spare (512MB+) it is one way to make use of it if you are using Win9x....
